D - Horror Title (Saturn port) - My Thoughts

Post by Jagosaurus »

Beat D last night. For those of you who don't know, this game is a horror, puzzle, FMV game with a two hour time limit - no pausing allowed. Originally on the ill-fated 3DO, it was ported to the SS & PS1.

Very original concept, I felt like I was literally playing a horror movie. You'll constantly be checking your in game watch (enter hospital @ 3p, game over @ 5p). There are 3 possible paths: game over @ 2 hr mark, good ending, & bad ending

My only complaint is the random hallway generation in the rotating room. Takes a bit to end up in the area you are attempting to reach.

Fun facts: D2 on DC & Enemy Zero on SS are made by the same creator and feature the same protagonist, Laura.

Great October title & I'll likely revisit this one near Halloween

Edit: grammar

yeah I love it. If you click the link in my sig, I did a review of it a while ago. It's truly a brilliant game that I think most gamers should experience at least once.

I picked it up a long time ago on Saturn from Temple of Pong (defunct independent shop) and it was awesome. Some of the puzzles were really difficult.

I remember I bought it because there was a huge thing about it several years before in GamePro and I was just like :O when I saw it. I hadn't seen anything like it before.

Hey I am glad you liked D, it was a lot of fun at the time and that company was really going in unique and different directions with their games during that time. I loved Enemy Zero for the Saturn and have to say that that is one of the few games that is great to play and just as great to watch someone play. So much fun!

Never played D, never even knew about the 2 hour time limit. I'm intrigued now.

So which port is better: PS1 or Saturn?

Was saddened to hear of Kenji Eno's death. Just found that out today (passed in February). Great article from Wired on some of his antics (guy had balls & class!):

Yeah the 2 hour limit is nerve racking!

@ ports: I only own SS version & it looked nice & ran as smooth as FMV games can lol. Well I've always noticed the PS1 port is 3 discs & the SS port is 2. Via T2K, a member of JSII who knows his crap when it comes to the 3DO:
The Saturn version was a very nice port, actually. The 3DO version was a bit cleaner, and the Playstation release was essentially a "Director" Cut", taken from the three disc version that was released for the 3DO in Japan only, making it one of the harder to find versions of the game. It's cool, but is plagued with the same thing as most 3DO "Ports" to the Playstation. There are some problems with load times and the FMV looks muddy. Oh, and it's stupid expensive anymore to boot.

Holy crap... pics of 3DO D's Diner Directors cut. They're asking about $700 for it!

http://akiba-games.com/3do-d-s-diner-di ... s-cut.html

Wiki on this directors cut:
There is a very rare edition of D called D's Diner: Director's Cut. It features never before seen sequences, four trailers for the game, a "D" "sound novel" that tells the history of Laura's family, ending as the events in the game unfold and a mini disc featuring three tracks from Kenji Eno's D soundtrack on it. Additionally, after completing the game with the "Good" ending and watching the credits roll, players are treated to a long trailer for the original version of D2, which was initially scheduled for the 3DO and later, upgraded for the 3DO M2 Player before being completely reworked for the Sega Dreamcast.

As for D, I thought it was a very good game, but I hate the slow pacing. It's not my kind of style.
