US Saturn games that benefit from a RAM cart?

Post by noiseredux »

I feel like I've heard that some of the US Saturn games can use a RAM cart, although the feature wasn't publicized since no RAM cart was released in the US. Can anyone shed some light on which titles do so?

Does X-Men COTA or Darkstalkers possibly?

Unfortunately, we didn't see many of these great fighters outside of Japan.

Nope for Night Warriors and a def no for COTA. I checked for the latter some time ago.

Edit: I'm sure I own every US 2D fighter released for the system and MSH is the only US release tha with an option to use the 1/4 meg RAM Cart.

Good to know. Tested with Dark Legend? Only other US title I could see maybe using it.

MSH was always super slow for me even with the 4 in 1. Like it wasnt supposed to be that slow. It literally was like slow motion. Maybe it was just my copy. The weird thing is whenever I would put in xmen cota in then shut it off and put in msh and start playing it it would play normally, like the arcade every time. So every time I wanted to play MSH id always put in COTA and power it up then play MSH. WOrked every single time.

Funny you should mention this. Back when I was doing a TON research for my huge Review comparison for MSH 32-bit console release, I read somewhere someone mentioning something quite similar to what you are describing here. Didn't think much of it until I tried myself and surprisingly was able to reproduce this SUPER SLO MOTION gameplay issue. I tell ya, MSH on the saturn was major disappointment, and a missed opportunity to bring a near perfect port to the home. Don't care what anyone says.

The article states that 4in1 cart causes slowdown.

Nice article. Good stuff. Unfortunately it does not apply to MSH per se, and here's why:

-Unlike MS, MSH was designed to support external ram carts as a feature. It was NOT designed to require its use like the former.

-MSH on the Saturn was specifically designed to support the official 1Meg Ram Cart. I say this is is fact!
YES, the in game RAM mode feature can be accessed in the games "Options" with a 4Meg or the 4-1 AC Ram cart, BUT it only uses just one Megabyte out of any Cart. 2 Megs of onbaord system memory and 1 Meg off of a Ram cart = 3Meg Ram mode, or whatever the fuck its labeled in the game as.

Similar to this article where is states that using specific Ram Carts can cause slowdown, I read a ton of contradictory info that claimed that MSH plays perfectly and arcade smooth with the specific use of just ONE of the 2 official carts, be it in favor of one or the other. I tested the game for hours upon hours with all 3 Carts resulted in the performance of the game being identical across the board. I've played the game in every possible scenario that has been thrown out on the net. My time was simply wasted considering I knew what the results would be.

Now with respects to what sonikjesus has commented on. This is a completely different thing that is going on (or at least I am assuming!). I've seen it (or something VERY similar to what he has perhaps witnessed and is describing). Done it first hand. Scared the shit outta me! Never fucked with it again. True Story.
