Backgrounds in the DC versions of Resident Evil 2+3
Backgrounds in the DC versions of Resident Evil 2+3
Can anyone who owns the Dreamcast versions of these games tell me if the pre-rendered backgrounds in the RE 2 and 3 are rendered at 640x480 as well, or are they pixelated (same res as PS1)? I know the character models obviously are rendered higher; it's hard to tell from internet screenshots what the deal with the backgrounds are though. It seems with RE3 they are upgraded for the DC versions as per this screenshot (http://199.101.98.242/media/shots/150-R ... esis-3.jpg) but as you can see it seems like the side of the wall to the right is pixelated, so is that perceived higher resolution just mapped 3D model textures or what? Super confused... hope someone can clear it up for me.

I've heard that they're scaled. Haven't played them myself.

Re: Backgrounds in the DC versions of Resident Evil 2+3
I recall posting a pretty thorough report of both RE2 and 3 for both console conversions found on Dreamcast and Gamecube. It's somewhere around the forum here. Anywho for RE2 on DC, the entire game was upscaled even the CG cutscenes just like the PC version which was version ported to the DC. Unfortunately, in the case of the pre-rendered backdrops, it does little to improve them as they were orginally rendered at a very low resolution to begin with. The backdrops look slighly improved when dispaying in S-video, but look actually far worse in hiRes VGA mode. RE3 is a different story altogether. Even though the DC port was not based on a superior PC version, the "backdrops" still look vasty improved simply because the orignal RE3 PS1 release had displayed pre-rendered backdrops at about double the resolution compared to its predecessor. As a result, they look very good on the Dreamcast even when played in VGA mode 640x480. Hope this helps.

Thanks. Pretty much tells me the PS1 dual shock version of Resident Evil 2 is best for natural "display" purposes (240p character models in line with 240p backgrounds versus 480p models on 240p 2x scaled backgrounds) while RE3 is full on upgraded for 640x480 with the Dreamcast. I have to say the seemingly random pixelated objects in the backgrounds do look kind of jarring though with RE3, but seems like the difference in the resolution with what is there is worth it.
Do you about any differences in quality/features with the PC version versus the Dreamcast of RE3 by any chance? Something tells me using the d-pad on the DC controller will seem kind of awkward compared to the PSX controller. Did you find the analog control okay? I'm thinking I could always just use a USB controller with the PC version... (or adapter for DC)

Analog stick works well on DC ports. Controls like RECV.
