Sega CD region converter+NTSC games in Europe

Post by Menegrothx »

When I got my Sega CD and 32X I decided to go for American consoles despite the fact that I live in Europe because after doing some research I came to the conclusion that there were more US exclusives and that US prices are cheaper on both systems.

Buying games for the 32X was easy, but now I'm thinking of starting to collect more games for the Sega CD and the shipping prices to Europe kinda bug me. So here's a two part question

1. Are there any good region converter cartridges available? I'd like to be able to play European and Japanese Mega CD games on my Sega CD. Last time I checked (over a year ago) there was some site that was selling a cartridge like this, but it was quite expensive and the site looked kinda shady. I'd rather buy one from eBay or an official retro game store atleast. What are my options? I've heard about modifying consoles and changing BIOS and stuff like that, but I don't have the skills to do any of that stuff, so I want a simple solution similiar to the 4 in 1 action replay Sega Saturn import cartridge.

2. Do you guys know any good stores where I can buy Sega CD (and maybe American Sega Saturn) games? The annoying thing about the Sega CD and Saturn is that the cases are so big, so usually shipping to Europe ranges anywhere from 11-12 (if I'm lucky) to 28-30 US Dollars. And many times when there's a chance to get a pricy game from an auction at a decent price, there's no shipping outside the US.
It feels kind of counterproductive when trying to bulk up my collection with cheap games to pay as much for shipping that I pay for the game itself. On eBay I most of the time have to buy games individually, but if I could buy multiple games at once, the shipping should be something between 30 and 40 USD for 5-8 games (I think), which would save me a lot of money in the long run.

Any European(/South African/Australian/Brazilian...) members here who own a US Sega CD?

If any members here are selling Sega CD game lots, I'm intrested :)

Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

On YouTube the main guy of Strictly Sega Australia did a review of a cart that saves (acts as SCD backup RAM) & is a region converter also IRRC. I know it also hooks up to PC via data cable.

Edit:

Found video link:

You can back up saves, move save files to PC, region switch, & it seems use a flash cart moving ROMs to cart (? - wasn't sure this is exactly what he meant on the last point)

Note: I've never used this. These guys are in a PAL region, I'm in the States.

As usual carts only bypass lockout, not change the console's region.
50/60hz if necessary takes a mod. Just like Saturn or SNES for example.
Lum fan.

Assumed he had it running bc he already owns it but good point...

You'll need a power converter & need to buy games not 60 Hz optimized or region switch.

Agree. Shipping those brittle long boxes can be expensive here in the States too.
