Fatal Rewind Genesis Case

Post by CFFJR »

So I picked up a few genesis titles today, among them a copy of Fatal Rewind.

It came in an unusual case, taller than your typical genesis case, thinner at the spine, but a little wider on the front. It has no tabs or clips inside to hold the cart or anything like that. The cover art seemed like it was overlapping the spine a bit, and I wrote it off as being a rental replacement case.

When I got home though, I tried to transfer the cover art to a standard genesis case to see if it would fit more naturally, and its way off. It doesn't come close to fitting in a standard case, so I tried to fit it into one of EA's really thick cases (Technoclash, specifically) and it doesn't fit there either. Not only is it too tall, its also too wide. The art fits perfectly in this odd case, and its the right kind of paper to be the real thing (as opposed to a printout).

I thought this was weird, so I looked the game up on ebay and found two sales with cases just like mine.

Here's a pic of mine:

And here are links to the two ebay auctions with the same case. Its the last photo in the first link, second photo in the second link.

So what's the deal here? Did this weird case actually come standard with this game? Is this something obvious that I should have known about already?

Sorry if this all seems dumb, but its bugging me and I felt like I should ask.

I ended up with an EA F-117 for Genesis that had a case like that too. However I swear I saw a 'normal' case one too. I have also seen other EA games in different cases that I think were EA made, but not the thick ones. Since they were making their own carts, maybe they went through some wacky cases too.

Maybe so, that makes sense. The fact you had one for a different game is good support for that.

I think the weirdest part is the lack of tabs. Even with the manual in there, the cart slides around.

Yeah, I figured it was just some weird black rental case it ended up in but no tabs confused me too.

I have one of those, this one with The Immortal in it. I assumed that all EA games in the US had these cases, but it would seem not

Just checked...

my Immortal case is also of this type. 100% sure it's original. Bought it mint from the original owner (local find!). Longer, skinny, no tabs to hold game.

Compared to Road Rash 1... "fatter" EA case with tabs.

It really bugs me on the shelf, with the UK EA games being in a slightly different sized case to everyone else's and that one US case sticking out above the others.

The MD shelves bug me as a whole, with all the different styles of spines I'm constantly re-organising them to try and find the perfect order for it all.

Ha! Rearranged my Genesis shelves the morning I read this.

They definitely have character...

That's one thing I like about the Genesis library. I especially love the artwork and unique cover designs on the older games.

Most folks go on and on about uniformity, and while I understand why they want that, I find it a bit boring.

The CIB copy of The Immortal I picked up also had no tabs. I figured before reading this thread that I got a rental case. I wonder how EA shipped out games in those cases without the carts getting damaged?
