Why not? Is there something sub-optimal about it?

It's not worth putting more wear and tear than necessary on the expensive versions.

If some of the Sega CD games you want are the RPGs or Dune, plan on likely repairing the system internal save battery. Requires soldering.

Also look into a backup save RAM cart. With patience, I got mine for $18 IIRC. This will allow you transfer large save blocks from the internal memory to the RAM cart.

My Sega CD model 2's save battery is done. I use RAM cart to bypass transfer around it (reset, transfer save to RAM cart, turn off system, transfer save from RAM to system @ next boot).

I recommend looking into Eternal Champions CFTDS (really a sequel to Genesis game) & Rise of the Dragon... for cheap but solid titles. Good luck!

This. The CDX is extremely hard to try and open up if you think something has gone wrong that you might be able to repair. I purchased mine for $10 because it was broken; when turned on the CD wouldn't spin. I tried several ways to get things open so I could get at the drive shaft, but couldn't make much headway. Fortunately, I was able to get things working with a can of compressed air by shooting some in the space where the laser moves.

The other downside of the CDX is you can't run a 32X if you get one.

I was under the impression that the 32X works fine aside from the fact that it blocks the disc drive door from opening...

Yeah, you can use a 32X in it. They actually sold an adapter to help it fit better and it made the setup look like a toilet.

It has some info in the CDX manual, you can easily find a pdf of it online.

The primary requirement for 32X support is RGB video output.
Why Laseractive and Wondermega are incompatible.

Yes. RGB was actually added for the US market by X'eye.

But Genesis had RGB in the normal models... My US Genesis 1 does RGB no problem, and I'm assuming the Japanese Mega Drives are the same way. I don't see why the Wondermega took it out.

Oh well. Can it be modded for RGB? EDIT: apparently it can and it's pretty easy to do.
