I honestly don't think that Shenmue 3 should be released as a game. It'd probably be cheaper and easier to write it as a novel. But yes, I would back the game.

i'm late to the game on this thread and didn't read it all but i'm surprised that sega hasn't gone the downloadable game route a la Way of the Samurai 4. that game looked and felt like a PS2 game, but at least it got localized and is available for play.

I think the part that I really enjoy about the Shenmue Series is the multifaceted gameplay. The biggest is exploring the world. Clearly there are games that have gone above and beyond now--the Elder Scrolls series, Assassin's Creed, and many MMO's have amazing detailed worlds to explore. However, the battle system always felt satisfying and went beyond a typical fighting game because it was intertwined with plot elements. Forgive me if I'm naive to other titles out there that do the same thing, but there isn't a game that offers many diverse things to do in the form of easter eggs, etc.

I agree that what Shenmue did hasn't been entirely replicated since.
GTA 3 and on, while I think are pretty one-dimensional games, feel like they come the closest to the amount of diversion that the Shenmue series had with it. Shenmue is a lot like role playing or a sim of Ryo's life during his quest for revenge, with a lot of detail put into seemingly trivial or mundane aspects it. I don't think we've gotten anything quite like that since Shenmue II. A lot of the action/adventure games today seem to be a more streamlined presentation of Shenmue's basic game play, or varying degrees of emulation of GTA.

However, given Shenmue's similarities to the games in the already well saturated action/adventure genre of today, and its much slower pacing, I'm not so sure it would be all that marketable as a new release in today's video game climate. At least not for those who are new to the series.

what about the Yakuza games???

To answer the original question, I'd personally be far more interested in Shenmue III if it was released for Dreamcast. That would just be insane.

Though it's far more likely that any Shenmue III in reality would just be a downloadable title.

Truthfully, although I have the first three games in the series, I haven't played more than ten minutes of the first one. Did they give you side jobs, and let you play around with gachapon machines and arcade games, etc in Yakuza?
Even though I've always basically thought of Yakuza as the spiritual successor to the Shenmue series, I think it fits a little more in line with that edgy, sand-box, GTA period of games a little bit more; even though it has more of a story, has a bit more emphasis on combat, and the main character looks like an older half-brother of Ryo's.

Same here. I'd probably wet myself if this were announced.

Oooh. Gotta remember to do this when I get Home.
I would support it if it's a Dreamcast release and/or some sort of Dreamcast related content was available via Kickstarter.

I always seem to throw my money at the screen when I see a new Dreamcast project or if it supports Linux...

Done and done. I'd gladly put $60-$70 into this.
elmagicochrisg wrote:Oh yeah, while we're at it. Why not a Kickstarter project to get more DC games online again?...
Now here's an idea. If they could make broadband adapters more easily available, I'd empty my wallet into a project like this.

I would back it. Imported DC Shenmue II from the UK.
