I, like many of you had the same rude awakening with memory cards with my dreamcast. I had come from the n64, and never owned a playstation so I was not familiar with memory cards. I started playing Shenmue, and got a few hours in before I realized... I read the manual and misread a part that made me think that you could save to the console its self, but I was sadly mistaken...

I said it doesn't just do software emulation, but every PS3 mobo has a miniature PS1 chip on it. But some functionality didn't translate through perfectly. When you make something smaller sometimes you have to cut corners, the chip is mostly there to emulate the weaker sound capabilities so sometimes graphical glitches and crashes happen.Valkyrie-Favor wrote:PS3 does use software emulation to run PS1 games. It's so powerful that perfect emulation just isn't a problem. Heck, the PSP does just fine with software. No reason to have PS1 chips in there. The early PS3s had PS2 hardware, and the slightly later ones (like mine) have emulated PS2 support with the real graphics chip. Also the early PS2s had PS1 hardware in them, but I'm pretty sure the slims use software for that too.
Either way, the games are written to support a very small filesystem. You'll have to save games in 128kb chunks. That's 16 games per memory card, folks.

Could you please provide a source. I googled for it and couldn't find anything about a mini PS1 chip. I'm 99% positive it's software only. There's no reason for there to be a chip for "sound capabilities" when the PS1 uses CD audio. I've never seen any graphical glitching beyond what was normal for a PS1 game either.SirPsycho wrote:I said it doesn't just do software emulation, but every PS3 mobo has a miniature PS1 chip on it. Older. Not wiser.

My first experience was when I rented Shadowman on the N64, which required a memory card. And I didn't discover this until I wanted to save and quit for the night, as the rental copy didn't come with a manual.jay_red wrote:I, like many of you had the same rude awakening with memory cards with my dreamcast.
