And for the record, does MGS4 really excite you guys that much? I've watched many trailers, and I just don't see the appeal. I'm not getting into the story at all. Too much of a family reunion thing going on. I also listened to the soundtrack and its the worst in the core series of 6 games, by a long shot.

It could be about patience, but I tend to think of it is as passion. Maybe us old folks lost some of the sparks, some of the fire as we grow older.

As for MGS4, personally for me it is the story. It is like a captivating book that I just cannot put down because I want to know what happens next. With MGS4, it is the conclusion to that great book. I want to know who lives, who dies, and after reading all those pages (playing all those games for almost 10 years), how it will finally end. Bottom line, if you don't get wrapped up in the story, then you won't enjoy it half as much.

Philosophy is one of my favorite subject and since the MGS series have quite a few philosophical ideas in there, I love it even more. My favorite metaphysical moment was in MGS2 with the concept of information control or information censorship. We usually believe in whatever we see and read without questioning its factuality or credibility. In a way, it is like we are being told what to do, what to learn, what to believe. Makes you wonder if we are just mindless drone following instruction from our master, whoever that might be, the government, God, the Patriots???

I'm absolutely loving the new MGS. I've played it tons over the last 2 days. I got mine yesterday morning, woohoo! Fuck you midnight launches! :P hehe. I just don't want to stop playing it but I had to come back to my flat to work. It sucks. Wish I could just stay at home and play it until it's finished.

My gf and I went to the super smash bros brawl midnight release because gamestop is only a block away. It was ridiculous...some kid was filming for a college project and an actual brawl broke out 'cause some twerp didn't want to be filmed and thought it was socially acceptable to put a total stranger in a real choke hold. Luckily the guy he attacked did jujitsu and new how to recover from being completely body dropped onto concrete and got the guy into a guard stalemate (he was still taking some rough punches in the face). Some mama's boy had pepper spray and was threatening to use it if they didn't break it up and none of the gamestop employees even came out to see what was going on. Overall it was just bizarre to be standing in line for the most kiddy nerd-for-all game ever and having fanboys duking it out at one in the morning. I'm just glad I didn't have to step in because we had had a rugby match that day and I was in no mood to get thrashed any further.

I went to my Wal-Mart at midnight for this launch as well, mostly because I wanted to get the free $100 GC with purchase, which makes the bundle an excellent deal (and the 80 GB model meant I could sell my PS2 for some additional cash as well). When it all said and done, I'll have the bundle for about $300 - a more reasonable price for a new system.

I really liked MGS 1, and while I enjoyed the additional maneuverers and excellent graphics in MGS 2, I was one of those crying foul about playing a game with Raiden instead of Snake - I also found the plot a little too convoluted, even for this series.

(Unless you'd consider series like G.I Joe or James Bond to be "thinkers," I'd disagree that there is anything "philosophical" about these games. People toss that word around...)

I thought MGS 3 was horrible - easily the worst in the series in terms of action, plot, etc. It had too many cutscenes and codec chatter, too little playing the game itself - and the play that was there wasn't as engaging as MGS1 or 2.

So far I am about 5 hours in to MGS 4, and I must say that my expectations were low for this game. That said, I have been blown away by the immersive gameplay and its control mechanics, the story is intriguing enough (and doesn't require encyclopedic knowledge of the series) to make you want to keep pushing on, and the overall fun factor/excitement that marked my experience with the MGS1 on the PSX has returned. I highly recommend this game, and I think its multiple 9 or 10/10s and 90s/100 across the net are largely valid (based on my impressions so far).

I'll never understand why people need to see a movie or buy a game as soon as humanly possible. Frankly, I've never, ever been that excited about anything that I couldn't wait for it at least a few days(even when my beloved Dreamcast came out). NOTHING on god's green earth is THAT good.

Well actually, there is one exception and I'm embarrassed to admit it. I actually bought into the hype for Halo 2. They had an awesome gameplay trailer for the game before it was released. The final product had nothing even resembling that trailer. The game was just more of the same, except with a much worse story mode than the original. The multi-player is where all the attention went, and I absolutely despise shooters that are all multi-player at the expense of single player. Single player is ALWAYS the paramount reason I buy any game. Plus, some of the changes they did in multi-player were just god awful. I blame my friends for getting me hyped about Halo 2. Morons

As for Metal Gear Solid, the whole series is plagued by bad controls and the stealth elements are hit and miss. There are FAR better stealth games, yet none as glorified as this series. It's amazing how this franchise gets away with such dated gameplay. That said, I do enjoy the story. With the exception of Metal Gear Solid 2, the games tell wonderful tales, and Hideo is really good about creating epic, cinematic and memorable moments. Unfortunately, his boss fights are hit and miss. For every great, memorable boss fight he comes up with, there is one that is completely laughable, like a fatman on skates or a guy who attacks you with bees.

I've actually really enjoyed the music in the MGS series

Hideo Kojimo is bought genius and idiot all wrapped into one. In his games, I see brilliant ideas and yet I also see some of the dumbest ideas ever(like removing the radar in Metal Gear Solid 3 while keeping the overhead camera, which made the game damn near unplayable). Metal Gear Solid games always frustrate me, but I usually come away from them with something that makes me not regret playing them. I hated MGS 3 for a couple of hours into it, then I reached a certain point in the game where my interest picked up and the final act of the game completely floored me it was so damn good. Though it took me a video walkthrough to even have the patience to get that far as the overhead camera and lack of radar made it so hard to spot enemies and that was pissing me off.

I've purchased stuff on release date, but it was more out of being awake and realizing it is released. If it is something that has a line though, NO, I won't go.

no, I wasn't there at midnight for MGS4 though, never liked the MGS series.

... the only reason I entered this thread. I thought it said "Midnight Lunch" and got really hungry, DAMN YOUUUUU!!!!!
