Here are some comparison shots. The first one is on a real N64. The second is from Wii64 which looks essentially the same as the VC emulator.

Notice how the edges look smoother on the wii because of the higher resolution. It is most noticeable on the edge to the right of Banjo. Also notice how the blur is gone around Bottle's mole hill on the wii.

What? Since when did PS2 upscale PS1 games? Well, It sure as heck doesn't change 240p titles into 480i. Much to the dismay of HDTV owners...

iirc, doesn't the Wii via component cables allow you to have 480p in games that didn't even support 480p originally?
Only on compatible games so if it didn't support 480p then you can't run the game in 480p.

I don't think PS2 upscales PS1 games. It just adds some (very weak) texture filtering.

The one time I turned it on, I didn't see any difference. I've never bothered with it since. I think IGN had a comparison article on their PS1 page, but I didn't get the same results they got, it seemed.

Even on its own games, the PS2 had the poorest texture filtering of its generation, so it shouldn't be a surprise that it falls flat with PS1 games :(

It depends on the game. I found that Rival Schools look a lot better with it, but I can't really think of anything else that had a particularly noticable improvement.

Again, I dunno if the PS3's smoothing is just better or not, but I think it makes all PSX games look really good.

The 32X offers a bit cleaner picture for Genesis games when installed. I'm pretty sure it doesn't actually upscale them, though.

Also, the Bleemcast PS1 emulator on the Dreamcast upscaled certain games to 480p and included antialiasing. Check it out:

I didn't know this. So buying a 32X can actually be worth it. Besides a few good games of course.
Thanks everyone...
