Consoles that Upscale Graphics on Backwards Compatible Games

Post by BurningDoom »

Are there any consoles out there that truly do this? There are plenty out there that have backwards compatibility and some of them boast the ability to upscale graphics on previuos generation games. But which ones can actually back this claim up?

Gameboy Color and Gameboy Advance are obvious choices, I suppose. But I was thinking actual consoles. Some I'm thinking of:

-Atari 2600 on Atari 7800

-Sega Master System on Sega Genesis

-PS1 on PS2

-PS1 & PS2 on PS3

-XBox on XBox 360

-Gamecube on Wii

What's the verdict on these? Do they actually upscale?

Yup. In my opinion, gamecube games look better when played on a Gamecube (With component cables)

My understanding is that the Genesis and 7800 offer no upgrade whatsoever on games for the older consoles, and I've certainly never noticed any differences when playing 2600 games on the 7800.

I depends on what upscale means exactly. The gba can stretch a Gb/bga color game to fill a screen, but it offers no special filters or any sort of internal rendering change. It just renders at the low resolution and stretches the picture.

The wii VC N64 games are upscaled. They are rendered at a higher resolution then they were originally. I think the PS3 does the same thing with psone games, but I can't say for sure since I don't own one.

Don't add to my problems by pretending my past views are still held in the present. I do not have any patience for that. Feel free to ask me what I think now.

By definition this is up-scaling.

The Wii isn't up-scaling the N64 games, it is rendering them at a new resolution. No up-scaling at all.

Hate to nitpick about that, but yeah.

The super game boy upscales some games and enhances the graphics a bit.

iirc, doesn't the Wii via component cables allow you to have 480p in games that didn't even support 480p originally?

Anhow, the ps2 has a somewhat out of the way option to enable texture filtering in ps1 games. Generally it looks pretty nice, but you have to turn it on EVERY TIME you turn on the console. It can also enable fast loading, which causes some games to glitch up.

Not too sure if the ps3 has those options. I think it does, but I'll have to go check again. I know it CAN upscale ps2 games though.
