Retail Chain Exclusive Physical Games

Post by Jagosaurus »

Hey RB Crew, I was thinking about exclusive retail releases recently. More pertaining to physical releases not found elsewhere, outside of collectors/limited editions or DLC specific bonuses, also not including Limited Run Games.

-----
Running list, ongoing RB community effort:

Toys R Us:
Sneakers - Original Xbox
Cookie Shop - Nintendo DS

Game Stop:
Xenoblade Chronicles - Wii
Metal Wolf Chaos XD - PS4
Secret of Mana remaster - PS4

EB Games:
Worms - Atari Jaguar
Zero 5 - Atari Jaguar
Breakout 2000 - Atari Jaguar
Towers II - Atari Jaguar
Iron Solider 2 - Atari Jaguar CD
World Tour Racing - Atari Jaguar CD
Fat Bobby - Atari Lynx
Raiden - Atari Lynx

* NOTE - These late Jaguar & Lynx games were also available via mail in/phone direct from publisher Telegames. See pic attached of catalog advertisement.*

Wal Mart:
Farming Simulator '19 - Xbox One

Burger King
Sneak King - Original XBox / 360 combo disc
PocketBike Racer - Original XBox / 360 combo disc
Big Bumpin' - Original XBox / 360 combo disc

* NOTE - distributed directly at BK for $3.99 each.*

Amazon (web)
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure All-Star Battle - PS3

Blockbuster
While not traditional retail maybe worth mentioning Blockbuster exlcusives. These seem to be well documented:

... I know I'm missing a ton. I remember seeing several GBA & DS exclusives personally. Know of more? Own some titles? Any other retail chains to add such as Best Buy?

The list may become large, but will update OP accordingly to keep a running reference list :D. Could come in handy if you're wanting to pickup titles before prices jump or just as a collecting oddity.

Great topic!

I think GameStop had all of the Operation Rainfall games. I’m probably wrong on that but I vaguely remember the Last Story and that other one (can’t remember).

Although it’s outside the scope of this thread, I remember a ton of exclusive Pokemon event distributions that took place during the third and fourth generations. GameStop, Toys’r’us, Game (UK), and other retailers. I got some of the GameStop distros back in the day.

Back on topic: are we counting widely released games but had special packaging? Walmart had an exclusive release of Pokémon Heart Gold and Soul Silver that came with a figurine of the corresponding mascot.

I was thinking the same thing on Operation Rainfall, but couldn't recall for sure. The 3rd title was Pandoras Tower. Were they all GameStop only titles outside of Japan?

I was considering including retail version special editions if they included notable DLC you'd have to buy separately (digital only) vs just a custom in-game skin, etc ... and/or exclusive cover art/packaging.

On that same note as Pokemon figurine, I was thinking of Conduit 2 (Wii) limited Edition that was a GameStop exclusive with holographic style cover, physical art book extra, & in-game skins:

GameStop and SEGA Announces Details on GameStop Exclusive Conduit 2 Limited Edition

So it is a box art variant with an art book. I just thought that quickly got into all the many recent special editions made to sell pre-orders. Some of which now actually don't even include the game itself  :?

Do we have to include the 3x Burger King original Xbox / 360 combo titles? They were technically retail... er, fast food ... exclusives :D

Gamestop has a search filter for exclusives. It isn't 100% accurate but if the item also says "GameStop Exclusive" in the title, it is probably correct. Xenoblade was the only Operation Rainfall game that was an exclusive. You could also get it from Nintendo.com though. That's where I got my copy back when it came out.

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure All-Star Battle for PS3 is an Amazon exclusive.

GameStop had an exclusive release of Metroid Prime Trilogy without the steel box like the original premium release.

Thanks for confirming @bmoc on Operation Rainfall titles.

I tried that GameStop Exclusive search based off something I saw on Reddit, but it looked suspect. I saw Star Wars Outlaws listes there & WalMart. Might require some cross referencing but good tip.

Hm, Good point on Amazon. I was going to leave LRG out because they're all online exclusives ... but I didn't think about standard online retailers (vs brick & mortar) that get occasional online purchased only physical copy exclusives  throwing me off. Probably going to make an exception for them & list it.

Thanks @marurun. I actually remember seeing this on sale at GameStop ... I should've bought it then  had an early, solid job was still a poor college student.

I know you are looking at retail store exclusives, but what about the rental exclusives that were never meant for commercial sale?

What about consoles?

Based on a quick search on Console Variations, there are 20. I’m just eyeballing it. I haven’t checked every entry and I limited it to only consoles sold in the US markets under Toys’r’Us.

Dang! They actually had rental exclusives!

Based on that list, I don’t think I’d count the Donkey Kong game for example. Seemed like it was for a completion only. Not sure if they rented those carts out.

I had linked a Blockbuster exlcusives article in the original post. Were there other rental chains? I always think of Clay Fighters Sculptors Cut.

@Gucci - I ran across the Toys R Us GB variants before. Really cool. I ddn't know about the N64 sets or the SpongeBob GBA SP was from there. Good stuff.

I don't know how accurate this list is, but it's supposed to have all the Blockbuster exclusive games and game versions on it.
