PS1 keeps going to the Memory Card/CD Player screen.

The other day, I bought an original Gray Playstation from a game store. On my new (New to me) PS1, I keep getting the "Memory Card/CD Player" screen, even though my discs aren't that scratched. Could it just be the age of the console?

Does the disc drive ever boot/make noise?

From my understanding, the laser lens in earlier PS1 models is not great and is known to die out relatively quickly.

The PS1 console I received as a gift shortly after launch had a lens that died a few years later, and didn't even make it to the release of the PS2, so I was especially glad the PS2 had backwards compatibility.

I hear the disc whirring when I turn the PS1 on.

It may think the lid is open. Try pressing down the mechanical "button" on top right, inside trey with a pen or toothpick. This is how the system knows the lid is closed.

If lid is open, boots to mem card screen IIRC.

I got an original Xbox and found out that you need to remove the clock capacitor, and I got a gray PS1 with a dying laser.

Is this something you have to deal with for old consoles, or do I just have bad luck?

Yep, just old consoles being old. For exame, you'd have a hard time finding a working game gear that hasn't been recapped.
