Re: PlayStation Classic
No Crash, Spyro, Tomb Raider, or SoTN are all a big loss. Agreed.
This list, with major third party omissions, brings to light what worries me about the N64 classic. Microsoft isn't letting go of those Rare Replay classics. Will it satisfy enough buyers without those Rare titles? I think there were 11, but believe Ninty owns the 2 DK games now (see DKC on SNES CE). 007 & Mickey Racing are double licensing nightmares. No 007, Banjos, Perfect Dark, Jet Force Gemini, Blast Corps, K.I., or Conker. Anyway ... related sidebar.

Re: PlayStation Classic
I've always said an N64 Classic has no hope of ever being what it should be. I assume they will be able to sell them by the bucket load off the back of Mario 64, the two Zeldas, Smash Bros, Mario Kart and Mario Party, but the lack of such a huge chunk of the good titles will hurt it a hell of a lot for people like me.
It's just a bad idea in my opinion. I would much rather have a Gameboy Color mini, with a mixture of the Color and classic b&w Gameboy games. Bonus if they can release two different versions with Pokemon Red or Pokemon Blue and they allow wireless bluetooth link up for multiplayer and trading Pokemon.

Re: PlayStation Classic
Now that the initial wave of disappointment has passed, I can appreciate a few of these titles. I always liked Oddworld and Rayman. Metal Gear Solid seemed like an obvious choice to me. I played Intelligent Qube in a demo disk back in the day, and I liked the first few levels. Maybe I will enjoy the rest of the game.

Re: PlayStation Classic
I had a pretty similar feeling of "it's not THAT bad," but it's just hard to justify the asking price for me. I don't value the novelty of the tiny PS1 that much to the point where I'd want to effectively overpay for a few games that have ports on PSTV or PS4 remakes. I've talked to some people who said they're happy to pay the $100 JUST because FF7 is on this thing, but I don't think people like that are even a significant minority Xpsamsonlonghair wrote:Now that the initial wave of disappointment has passed, I can appreciate a few of these titles. There are a couple of surprises in that lineup, but overall I think I agree with the majority that it's a bit of a disappointment. I can understand why the likes of Spyro, Crash and Symphony weren't included. Those just got/are getting remakes and a re-release, respectively, so I'm not shocked that they didn't get included. But it's no less disappointing.
That said, there are a couple surprises. I wasn't expecting them to included FFVII, what with the remake coming up. But that might be far enough away that Squareenix doesn't care. And I don't think anyone was expecting Intelligent Qube or Persona, but considering those games rarity/pricyness, they are, at the very least, some interesting additions.
I think the weakest links are likely Cool Boarders 2, Destruction Derby and Jumping Flash. I don't think anyone was clamoring for those and even fewer likely even remember them at all, let alone remember them fondly enough to be included on a 'classic' console.
Honestly, it's not too bad a lineup. They did a good job at diversifying the genres, at any rate. It's just not as good as it could have been. Which is great for me, cause it saves me $100 bucks.

Re: PlayStation Classic
I still look back on the PSC here and i still can't justify it. I can read the list, see what's there, realize how many decent games there are, but the glaring omissions that aren't blocked by ratty developer blockages(like spyro and crash due to activision) I still can't understand the stupid logic behind some of the list. Some of it is largely magnified by the better selection Japan got. I could see no Darius in the US, but Gradius, come on?
Also seeing the easy way to tie this back to who really started this proper like (Nintendo) where's the justification here value wise? They've diluted every one of the games on that list pretty much to nothing with all the releases and re-releases in digital format as it is and it has largely impacted the physical end of it. You look at the SNES CE from a year back and you have effectively about a $1000 in cartridges there for $80 that has 2 controllers in the box, and the full AC adapter with USB cable too. That value just is lacking from a monetary end, but also from substance. Look at the same developers between both the boxes and you have to ask why Konami, Capcom, and Namco basically screwed Sony on this deal.

Re: PlayStation Classic
That's more or less how I've come to look at it. Nintendo's own fairly bad efforts to have an easy, digital platform to buy their old games on made the SNES Mini have much higher value than it would've had otherwise. PSN has SO many of these games on it, or these games have had other re-releases very recently otherwise, that the 20 extra bucks that the PSC really has a tough time justifying why anyone should bother buying it when they can just buy the games in that collection they actually want on their current gen Sony console for 6 bucks a pop or so.Tanooki wrote:Also seeing the easy way to tie this back to who really started this proper like (Nintendo) where's the justification here value wise? I wasn't going to buy the PSC because no Dualshock controller, but this list of games is another reason for me to pass.

Nintendo seems to prioritize their own titles on these Classics. I actually think they could release a N64 Classic with about 20 games without Rare IPs.

Phil Spencer in the past has said he's willing to work with Nintendo on rerelease stuff like this. Probably best to forget about Goldeneye 007 however. It is in rights-holder Hell. MS tried to rerelease it on X360 and it got shot down. At least we got Perfect Dark.Jagosaurus wrote:No Crash, Spyro, Tomb Raider, or SoTN are all a big loss. Agreed.

Re: PlayStation Classic
Eh, Nintendo offered many of those games on their various Virtual Consoles. The main thing they didn't do was have the account-based consistent storefront. That said, Sony did drop support for PS1 games from the PS4, so it's not necessarily a matter of just grabbing them for whatever console. Someone going back to their PS3 to play a PSOne Classic isn't much different from firing up their Wii U for the VC.PartridgeSenpai wrote: That's more or less how I've come to look at it. The value proposition should really be considered more from zero. Same as with the Nintendo ones, it's entirely possible for someone to have pretty much everything included already (Star Fox 2 being the standout exception across all of them). At that point, sure, the asking price may be more than it's worth. However, if buying everything that you actually get...a Playstation Classic is going to be the most cost-effective option by a good margin.
