What was the last movie you've seen?
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Let Me In.
Not seen it since it came out and it's still a great film and yes I have seen Let the Right One in and like this more. I think the 2 mains are better actors and the film has extra polish the original needed. And hey from some of the same people. I typically don't care about US remakes of foreign horror films.

Hatchet

Released: 2006
Rotten Tomatoes: Critics 50%, Audience 44%
IMDB: 5.7/10
Availability: Streaming for free on TubiTV app
Google Play: $2 to rent and $6 to buy
Well... I've been wanting to see this since around 2010 or so and you guys have been recommending the series to me for years in the annual Halloween thread. I finally got around to it. I am planning to watch all 4 in the series this year. The first entry is streaming for free on Tubi and if you want it without ads, it's stupid cheap these days for a digital rental. This one is worth checking out.
First, I was expecting more of a straight forward frightening and disturbing horror vibe, akin to 2003's Texas Chainsaw reboot. I heard so much about Hatchet being the return to the slasher genre, and I had that type direction in mind. Instead, it is much more campy and over the top. I was never really on the edge of my seat or scared, but the violence is definitely there in more of horror meets Mortal Kombat fatality type of way. Once I got over my incorrect preconceived notion of the tone, it was fun. You can also tell the first film is on a budget although you will recognize a few cast members such as Joel David Moore (Grandma's Boy, Avatar) and Deon Richmond (Scream 3, Pysch TV show). Also, Kane Fodder of Friday the 13th fame plays Victor Crowley, the deformed swamp dwelling, hatchet wielding villain. That brings me to my next point.
I really enjoyed the lore behind Victor Crowley and the unique setting. The film opens in a NOLA Madi Gras scene and embraces that creepy, vudu, ghost, swamp tour, haunted history culture of the city. Full disclosure, I am dang near 100% cajun so perhaps I am partial to this backdrop of cypress trees and cajun myths as I grew up with similar superstitions and lore of wood/bayou monsters. I enjoyed stepping directly into this world where Victory Crowley was already a local legend versus building up some seemingly random serial murderer. This did remind me of staples of the genre such as Friday the 13th and Halloween.
While it wasn't what I expected, I do see why it was a surprise hit among horror fans when it came out. I am interested to see where the series goes with some more notoriety and budget behind it. It also doesn't hurt Danielle Harris is in the next two installments of the franchise!
What do you think of this one and later entries in the series (spoiler free :])? Does the campy tone stay pretty much the same or shift at all?

I have this imaginary table of 15 interesting people (for varying reasons) I drink a beer with if the world was ending. It's a weird game Mrs Jago and I play. Danielle Harris is setting right next to me at said fictitious tablenoiseredux wrote:Yeah I love Danielle Harris.

Yeah, the 4th one just dropped on DVD/BD/Digital in February '18. Saving it for Halloween thread? Ill.probably burn through all 4 of these this spring.

I get Isla Fisher and Amy Adams mixed up all the time. Are we still friendsnoiseredux wrote:Sounds like a good game. #AmyAdams
Here's a Danielle Harris hidden gem for you, unless you're already a metal fan, you likely haven't seen it. Great song and she's looking great as always.
I knew her from the Disney original movie Wish Upon a Star and Roseanne first. I didn't realize that was her as a kid in Halloween (4 and 5?) until years later when I was in college.

Ironically Isla Fisher plays a version of Amy Adams in Nocturnal Animals.
Do you remember Harris in Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead? Haha

Watched the new jamanji a few times. Then went back and watched the OG. New one wins to me, alot more enjoyable. Never realized robin williams character was a dick in that movie.

I can't remember who the older brother was now. But Applegate's love interest was Chandler haha.
