Will the 360 HD DVD Player Work on Newer Models (E)

I have the E model 360 which was the last revision released. Any one know if the HD DVD player will still work? I found evidence of it working on a Slim which is assume is the S model.

Below is quote discussing on slim models:

I just tried to play my Hd DVD player and had the same issue. After an hour or so, I finally got it working. You have to go into settings, and enable 'auto play'. then insert your disk into the drive and it will start automatically. After that you can then turn auto play off again if you wish. Now when you go to the video/movie blade, you go into 'my video apps' and there will be a app that says 'HD-DVD" and thats how you play it from now on. This is the only way to get the app to show up.

Has anyone tested this recently or can confirm it works on an E model?

We had one in my college house and the movies are dirt cheap on ebay. I've been thinking of getting into laser disc (for 10+ years ) but this would be fun too.

Well, looks like the standalone Toshiba players run $30 to $50. Not bad.

Still tempted to try the 360 player to save on a HDMI port used.

Also worth noting, seems some of the WB movies are experiencing disc rot.

You'd need to use an HDMI cable to get the most out of the format anyway. 'course, since the 360 doesn't support lossless audio codecs, it's already not going to be the best results.

Is anything exclusive actually left for HD-DVD? I mean, cheap as the used discs might be, most of the stuff released during that time period is probably fairly cheap on Blu-ray as well.

This was my thought as well. Is there any cool oddity that makes it worth looking into?

I know there are a couple things that were released on HD-DVD but not Blu-ray, but I don't think it was anything especially cool.

Yeah, it would be more for an oddity, as well as cheap HD movies.

360 E is HDMI only. I'd have to buy the dedicated player to use component. Trying to move to HDMI as much as possible to future proof myself. I known that doesn't make much sense when buying a 10+ year old dead format

I own Wolf Creek on Blu Ray, so unless it was not released outside Australia on the format (don't see why), I would not hold that list to a high standard.

Amazon's listings seem to indicate that it indeed hasn't seen a region 1 release on Blu-ray. /shrug

Here's a list of the HD DVDs released. This was last updated in 2012 so the details/classifications will not be exact but looks like 484 US HD DVDs were released. The list does show Wolf Creek as a UK exclusive.

I'm honestly not too familiar with regions in BD. I've had 5 euro BDs over the years, and they all played fine in my NTSC US LG & Sony BD players. If you imported Wolf Creek, would it run? Assuming depends on disc and varies by movie. I think I recall reading reviews/Q&As on those 5 to ensure they'd run fine.

@iso, regarding the audio comment, I'm not a huge audiophile. I can tell the difference between a DVD & BD but I just use my TV speakers. These days I typically watch movies when my kiddos are sleeping so I couldn't crank up a sound system any way. I'm actually in the market for new wireless headphones for this reason. I did not know the 360 did not play lossless audio though. I will eventually get a surround sound set up within 5 years or so so if I plan on keeping the HD DVDs around, the stand alone player does look better regarding sound (and they're roughly the same price). Part of me still wants the 360 add on for nostalgia & video game industry oddity reasons.

Region protection has been less of a thing with Blu-ray. The standard does incorporate a system for it, but discs are region free more often than not (last I'd looked Wikipedia claimed something like 70%). Kind of similar to the case of most 7th gen and later consoles, though proportionally more BDs actually opt to use it. The 4K Ultra standard dropped region coding, though the players still support it for older Blu-ray or DVD content.

Either way, often viable, but not a given, so it's still worth your time to check.
