Games released on DVD/Blu-Ray? Like... "video" games?
I was thinking about how some of those old laserdisc games like Dragon's Lair have been released on DVD/BR, and it got me to thinking about if there are other games released this way? Like are there FMV games you can play on a DVD player? Do you consider things like this to be "video games" the same as a console game?

All games of today are on BR and every game of the PS2 era was on DVD. That said I know what you meant. There was the NUON. The idea was to license the tech for any DVD player manufacturer to play DVD games released for it. I don't know how many came out for it but I think it had a Tempest game.

I'm glad you knew what I meant because I thought I made it pretty clear.Segata wrote:All games of today are on BR and every game of the PS2 era was on DVD. That said I know what you meant.

I have this direct-to-video movie, Return To House On Haunted Hill (yeah, a sequel to a remake) that was "designed for use with the Navigational Cinema technology (which permits viewers to manipulate up to seven aspects of the story line to create more than 90 different versions of the film)."
So would we consider this an FMV game then?

Probably for good measure throw in VHS games like the Action Max. I believe Night Trap was originally made for a VHS console in mind that never happened.

yeah. Sewer Shark, too.Segata wrote:I believe Night Trap was originally made for a VHS console in mind that never happened.
This wiki page covers "interactive movies," and I'm betting some of them were released as DVD's rather than proprietary games.

There was actually a Tomb Raider one apparently.

I have Hologram Time Traveler on DVD, AFAIK it's the only release outside of the now-rare arcade cabinet. Unfortunately, DVD-video technology really isn't suited for fast-response FMV games, so it's kind of a mess. And even though it has a red/blue-3D mode, without the "hologram" effect, this game is kind of trash.
I played a bit of one of AnimePlay's games but TBH it felt REALLY stripped down: too much to be enjoyable. With the large quantity of visual novels to get proper, official English-language releases for PCs in the past 5 years, AnimePlay DVDs really seem pointless. Unless it's a title you're REALLY interested in, I guess...
It makes sense that folks attempted to make games for DVD, but the technology really wasn't designed for it. IDK how many Blu-Ray-video games have been released aside from Dragon's Lair, but I know that one is reputed to have some problems.
It seems that Laserdisc actually works better for it with its lack of loading times. That's why I dream of someday owning a LaserActive player...
There was at *least* three LD video game aimed at consumers with standard players: Maze Mania, MysteryDisc: Murder, Anyone?, and MysteryDisc: Many Roads to Murder. I haven't played any of them but imagine they could be at least passably entertaining and are probably way easier than LD-based arcade games.

I have Dragon's Lair 1&2 as well as Space Ace on DVD. Don't think I actually tried them yet, but from my experience, IR does not make for good wireless controllers.
