What's the Best Baseball Games You've Played?

Post by racketboy »

I'm a big fan of baseball. I used to be obsessed with MLB up through high school, but while in college, I fell out of keeping up on the players etc. (although I did watch some off and on these last couple years, but essentially skipping this year)

Anyway.....

I was a fan of both World Series Baseball on the Genesis and Super Baseball 2020 (originated on Neo-Geo, but I played Genesis port).
I even remember having a lot of fun with a DOS-based simulator (no graphics other than markers on the diamond) back in the late 80s/early 90s.
I played World Series Baseball 2K2 on the Dreamcast but didn't get pulled in too much.

I'm thinking of picking up a MLB Pros game as I've heard good things -- trying to decide on which version

Other than playing a bit at friends houses, I didn't play much baseball in the 8-bit era and nothing much newer other than those mentioned above.

I'd really like to tinker with some other Baseball titles, but would like to get some recommendations and what in particular you liked about them.

Thanks!

Honestly I've never much enjoyed the licensed stuff so if that's what you're after in this I can't help.

Since the early 90s I've loved Baseball Stars for the NES because it plays so smoothly and you could go so far with the excellent manager play and all the team building. No ties to dumb licenses and rolling rosters, just great. And the same namesake -- Baseball Stars 2 arcade -- totally epic especially if you can use the memory.

Also it's crusty but the old Pro Yakyuu Famista Baseball (aka RBI Baseball) franchise for the NES, GB, SNES etc is actually really fantastic. We even got one of those Famista baseball GB games here but oddly Bandai put it out for Namco as Extra Bases.

Licenses are cool, but not needed.

I loved Super Baseball 2020, but it was all futuristic, made up teams made up of both humans and robots, so.... :)

Looking at Baseball Stars for the Neo-Geo, I wonder if SBB2020 uses the same basic engine....

I played the mess out of Ken Griffy Jr. on the SNES & N64.

The SNES game has some great sprite work and cool animations (breaking bats when players upset sticks out). More of an arcade style.

The homerun derby on N64 literally ate 100s of hours of our summer! This was more simulation like. The ball parks were great. Water falls in Kansas City for example.

The few baseball video games I've enjoyed were RBI Baseball (NES), Super Bases Loaded (SNES), Super Baseball 2020 (SNES), and MLB Power Bros 2008 (Wii).
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

Some of the later Power League games on the PC Engine are fun, for baseball.

Oh I forgot about Griffey! I did enjoy that one!

Did anybody like Big Hurt baseball with Frank Thomas?

There is a patch for Ken Griffy SNES that updates the rosters every year. You can emulate it or patch the original cart on a system like the Retron5.

For me, my favorite baseball game was World Series Baseball II on the Saturn.

I forgot about Griffey back when that one came out using that DKC born ACM engine it looked absolutely stunning and combined with what they put in there and the SNES audio core the game really grabbed you around those solid baseball mechanics. I can't recall which one I liked better but only one if I recall had that really solid home run derby mode.

I don't know about best but for nostalgia. Bases Loaded NES. RBI NES. All Star Baseball 99 and 2000 N64. SNK Baseball Stars 2.
I esp have Nostalgia for this song,

It has such a 90s arcade sound to it.
