Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

The point of remaking a game is to let the later generations play a classic game that they otherwise wouldn't have right? Being 16 years old their are many old games that have been remade that I never would have had a chance to play if it wasn't for remakes. Chrono Trigger anyone? How bout Dungeon Explorer: Warriors of Ancient Arts? Or Revelations: Persona. It hasn't yet been completed but a confirmed remake is in the works.

get off mah lawn youngin! :)

dude- i'm 27 and i still miss games. Silent hill series... oops! sorry! It is the nature of the industry. They save a huge amount of AAA titles for Christmas. I usually get to play about half of them, and if i'm not on it i just outright forget about the other half. Sucks- but i ain't got all day to play games dag nabit.

I keep hoping Konami revives the King's Valley franchise. BGM references in Castlevania games simply aren't enough

If the remake is done properly then yes, Dragons Lair HD is my benchmark for this. They retransfered the game from the original film, not the arcade laserdisc like all other rereleases. Remastered the music from the original recording tracks. And they had the voice actors come back to clean up any issues the had. The result is a full HD 5.1 version of one of the most beautiful arcade games of all time. Remakes like FF Orgins/Dawn of Souls which updates the core of the game are also appealing.

But when a company takes an old game, ports it, adds a minigame, and then bills it as a remake, well thats just sad. Sure it gives the newer generation a chance to play an excellent game, but it could have been much more. I am looking at you Chrono Trigger DS (Which should have been Ressurection)

I think a lot of the original 3D games (mostly 32bit) really benefit from the remake. Most 2D games still hold up graphically from the 16bit era. Its the PS1 and Saturn (several but not all) games that could use a graphical overhaul. Going back to play them now, sometimes the graphics detract from the game (ex when you cant tell if something is a ledge or a jaggie.)

There is a remake of A Boy and His Blob that I really want to play, but it is going to be on the Wii, which I don't have. I hope they also release it for PC.

Also, if you're a real old-timer, you might be interested in this remake:

That isn't quite correct. There are often ways to play the games that wouldn't necessitate remakes. Obviously owning the original hardware and getting the game in the secondary market, emulation is another option.
Chrono Trigger was (is?) somewhat expensive, particularly for PAL gamers that IIRC would need to get a NTSC SNES for it as well, but it is easy to emulate as it is a SNES title (Saturn stuff is not as straightforward to emulate, so Nights was a cool remake; similarly Radiant Silvergun would be excellent to see remade, particularly with English translation). Curiously the three examples are so good that I think it is very nice to have remakes even when emulation is possible, as players have an opportunity to reward the developers by buying it (secondary market purchases don't reward the developers directly, at best they would reward them indirectly if the person that sells them uses the extra funds to buy a new game of the same developer).

I get what you are saying though, and I'm very glad when there is a remake that allows me to play a good game I wouldn't otherwise be able to play - the most notable example for me personally are games that would require that I knew Japanese to play comfortably, and that on the remake get translated. Good opportunity to praise the fan translations that are available for some games!
