Remakes?

Post by the King »

I searched and didn't see a similiar topic and this sort of came up from the discussions going on in the "Confused about Metal Gear series" thread.

First, do you like when games are remade? Sometimes I think it's done right and sometimes I know it's just to make a buck(what isn't though). I'm really against movies being remade as they never are as good as the original, but for some reason I'm on the other side when it comes to videogames. With the advances in techonology I think it's nice to have an updated version of a great game when although I'm willing to admit it may not be necessary.

What classic game/s would you want to see remade on one of the current consoles, if any?

I'd like to see an updated version of the original Metal Gear and Metal Gear2, maybe just as one game. Each one could be a chapter or something. Having never played through the second one, I would like to experience the story in the same way I did the Solid series.

I think you answered yourself, and it's a bit of a cop-out answer but it is the truth - it just depends.

There is no problem about it being done to make a buck, the problem is if it is JUST a cash grab and a crappy remake.

Also, there are some games that really benefit from being remade, and there are some that just aren't worth it even if they get major face lifts and such. But that will also depend, on the personal taste of anyone. I think most people can agree that Final Fantasy 1 has had enough remakes, and yet they sort of keep making that stuff (PSP version for example) and apparently it keeps selling.

I think RPGs and 32-bit era 3D games are the two that get the biggest benefit out of remakes (not ports). The NES era RPGs had many primitive mechanics either imposed via the limitations of their hardware or done due wanting to emulate PnP RPGs. The graphical improvements are always nice, but the biggest benefit usually ends up being adding more dialog for easier story comprehension, as well as removing some of the grindtasticness.

The 32-bit era 3D games really haven't held up well, graphical-wise and frequently in terms of things like voice-acting. Resident evil is the perfect example, and the remake on the Gamecube was great.

However, looking at most of what came out in the 16-bit era, it's pretty much all held up well, so they don't really need a remake.

I'd be interested to hear people's favorite remakes. I know many are a cash grab, but ones worth checking out are fantastic.

off the top of my head

street fighter HD remix and metroid zero mission were both very very enjoyable.

speaking of remakes i could do without crappy 3d or flash remakes of old 80's arcade games. Rarely do these remakes make for a good game.

I'm looking forward to the Silent Hill remake, which isn't Wii exclusive apparently. It's also seeing release on PSP and PS2. I heard an interesting tidbit to add on it, too:

"Also new to Shattered Memories is a psyche profile element, which monitors every aspect of player’s reactions – from where they explore first, items that have been examined, and their reaction to those they meet. Small visual elements will also be altered slightly, adding to the oppressing atmosphere where nothing is what it seems. The psyche profile will adapt Harry’s actions as and when he meets normal-looking people or the game’s many inhuman denizens."

So...the way I play the game effects how things look and behave? That could be pretty cool if done right.

Personally I love it whenever a game is remade. Even if they don't add too many new features to the remake from the original. The point of remaking a game is to let the later generations play a classic game that they otherwise wouldn't have right? Being 16 years old their are many old games that have been remade that I never would have had a chance to play if it wasn't for remakes. Chrono Trigger anyone? How bout Dungeon Explorer: Warriors of Ancient Arts? Or Revelations: Persona. It hasn't yet been completed but a confirmed remake is in the works.

Those are just a few good examples of games that I(And many others around my general age) wouldn't be able to play if it wasn't for remakes!
I feel old when talking to anyone my age yet too inexperienced to effectively talk to anyone older. Life is grand that way.
