This is a true story, but I used to be able to speedrun Super Metroid on the keyboard. Not sure if I could still pull it off... although the morph ball / super missile trick at the start of Brinstar was a lot easier to perform on keyboard since hitting down is more deliberate haha. I had a ASDF like setup for the buttons.

I used to be on a short list of people zsknight would send zsnes betas to when it was dos and into window until it went open source. I had a pretty solid PC back then so whatever was thrown at it worked at full potential so it was pretty fun. Before that was SNES96, then 96 w/sound into 9x and then it went public too.

As much as I enjoyed tinkering with .NES header files (that long document on them from 1999 on gamefaqs is mine), helpinf fanwen (fwnes) test out the first FDS playing emulator, and helping with a few things translating some Japanese emulators into english with hexediters the SNES really was my thing and it was a blast. If I could just see some trigger comments or just remember things I could put some interesting stuff into this thread on the emulation and rom dumping side of things.

I miss those days emulators don't really have that magic anymore of going from barely working garbage, a learning tool, into something that's truly special. I can't and will never code, but it didn't mean I didn't love to read all over those leaked Nintendo tech docs from warioworld.com or go through every emulators latest update (readme.txt) files and re-test everything I had for improvement.

I'm sure someone here also remembers MOSLO.EXE right?

If not, it was a DOS program only. Mainly meant for video games. In the earlier days of (later 80s early 90s) DOS gaming people didn't see a point to put a speed cap (speed throttling) on games because processors and little VGA cards could only go so fast. Few had the foresight to think that was a stupid idea that people may keep playing their stuff.

MOSLO would allow you to set a percentage and it would attempt to lock down a max speed a game was allowed to execute. I recall having to use it for years after going beyond the 486DX33 we had because Wing Commander didn't throttle and it would run at insane unplayable speeds.

Oh, man, yeah. Had a few games that didn't play nice otherwise. The only thing the program really did was chew up more CPU cycles.

I think playing consoles at my cousins and neighbors is just as big a part of my gaming history as when I got my own consoles and PCs. All my roommate's consoles in college lived in our living room!

I can make a list of my consoles, but I'm going to try to mix in consoles I also put 100s of hours in at friends and my cousins that I didn't own back then.

That first 486 PC gave me access to Doom, Wolf3D, MegaRace, Carmen San Deigo... man. Will include my first two PCs I played games on quite a bit. Kind of stopped new PC gaming once XP came out.

I was also in that awesome window where I had a NES as a kid, and the PS2/oXbox were king as I entered college. I got to experience what I think were the best times regarding jumps in game and hardware development, all as a kid or young adult when I had hours to spare.

Update to come...
