I've been wondering if I should just jump to Shenmue 2 and give it a shot. I really struggled to get into the first game.
It's funny you say that, but I am really excited for all the Yakuza we are finally getting too. Maybe not as excited as I am for Shenmue 3, but certainly not far off. I've already played through the Japanese version of 0, which I bought back when it looked like Sega had given up on the West and I can't wait to play it in English later this month. I'm really excited for the remake of the first game too, as I replayed the PS2 version last year and it has really aged.

Shenmue 2 is huge, has much faster pacing and has more action than the first game. You may enjoy it, but it might be that Shenmue just simply isn't for you. I wouldn't personally skip the first game, but I'm biased as hell.

Edit: Bogus summed it up perfectly!

You guys see Sega registered Shenmue HD and Shenmue Remaster domains? Hm....

Well, I guess I'll just say bad news for you and Bogus, but I'll hold off on Shenmue until I have no more Yakuza to play I think haha.

It's just a shame Yakuza is so fragmented with releases here, because I'm hearing some people say that 0 would NOT be a good place to jump in. I could easily see the argument there, like I always try to urge people jumping into Metal Gear Solid to at least start with the original PSX game... not MGS3 despite being a prequel. Maybe the remake of 1 will be a good starting point? But then there's the issue that, Yakuza 2 is becoming rare and really expensive. Plus I think the first two are dub only? It's a huge mess, a shame we didn't get the HD versions of 1-2 on the PS3. Still happy we're getting 0, remake, and 6 though.

3 was my first and took me awhile to get into. It's easy to see how integral the continuity is for this series. I'd love to get some other friends into it but it's hard to find a good starting point.

Thanks Sega!

No worries. I think we will get an HD shenmue 1 and 2 before shenmue 3 comes and then it would be a good idea to jump in.

Only the first Yakuza had a dub, but yeah, it's kinda shitty how fragmented releases have been in the West. I also really hate the fact 5 was digital only.

I know what you mean anyways man. I still haven't completed 4 and haven't even started 5. I also haven't started 2, which I only bought last year (same reason as you - price - but I caved and picked it up).

I played them in this order: 1, 3, 4 (haven't finished), 0

3 is awesome by the way. I don't understand why so many fans hate on it. I love the storyline in that game, with the orphanage etc. I know they inexplicably took out some content in the Western release (which they didn't do for any other Yakuza release), but it's still great in my opinion.

Was 3 censored? They all seem to love to throw some of that risque stuff in there.

I liked and didn't like the orphanage stuff. Looking back, I think it was awesome, but it was just a super weird jumping point in and the first hours were arguably super slow. I honestly took like months in between to get through that chunk haha. But when I really sat down with it and got beyond that part, I blasted through the rest. I liked the kids a lot and Haruka. Perhaps it would have been better to have that arc somewhere mid game... was just kind of a slow portion at the start. I've generally heard fans like it though, but you could be right and maybe it's not the most popular one.

3 does have some excellent recapping of 1-2 and most of the cutscenes I believe, but yeah. Would love to actually experience 2 someday, the storylines sound awesome.

I think I might go for 4 next since I own it, then 0 and the remake and work back up to 5. Yeah I also forgot to mention about its digital only release, that really sucks. I wonder if 0 and the remake do well, if they'll maybe consider putting out some compilations or something.

I guess I should maybe go ahead and grab the first game on the PS2 to check out someday before that gets rare too. The dub is a huge turnoff though. I'm more tolerant of dubs for games (Shenmue's is charming haha), but when it's split up like this and Yakuza is something that's all about Japanese culture... yeah just seriously needs to be in Japanese.

I don't know if 3 was censored per se, I think it was more content that was inexplicably cut either to rush the game over to the West in a timely manner or just because Sega does daft things. I can't really remember, but I think it was mostly minigames and side missions that were cut. They apologies over it, iirc and 4 was released without any cut content.

I'm replaying the first Yakuza right now (I started replaying it last year when I picked up 2, as I decided I would start the series from the beginning. This discussion inspired me to get back to that) and honestly I kinda enjoy the English dub. It's actually pretty good. It's not Shenmue style... I mean, Mark Hamill and a few decent names do the voice work. I do agree I would rather it was in Japanese though for consistency and because clearly it would just suit the game better, because of its setting and culture.

Having never played these games before, this sounds lovely.

Oh absolutely. I do not know a single person who honestly expected a 2017 release and everyone was okay with that.
