The Atari 2600 has all sorts of different cart shapes. The Famicom has some nice variation as well.

Me too. I had to buy Road Rash 2 twice because I wanted to original EA cart. EA carts rule. The little yellow tab grants them extra power I'm sure of it.

Seems the gripes about the Immortal remind me why I didn't give it a chance back in the 80s on the NES which is a shame. The bones are solid, but the execution leaves every single thing to be desired about it.

I'm surprised no one here cares about Star Control. I get people get all tingly over the sequel which it rightly deserves all the credit but the original had a gun campaign and combat modes which the Genesis executes nicer than on PC.

Always get Star Flight and Star Control mixed together. Seemed like overly complicated scifi PC simulations from screenshots.

My list would be:

1.Games which require a constant online connection even for Single Player :P.
2.Paid early access games. Especially those that are going to be "free to play" at release (Children of Tomorrow)
3.Microtransactions
4."Online Pass" codes required to access the multiplayer portion of a game.
5.Unfinished games with massive day 1 patches
6.Games that omit the ability to jump
7.Escort missions with suicidal AI NPCs (Fuck you Ashley  )
8.Invisible Walls (90+% of games ever released  )
9.Cliff hanger endings for unestablished series (Bulletstorm)
10.Poorly implemented third person cameras in a game with tons of tight spaces :P.
11.Horrible voice acting choices when dubbing a foreign game. Please just give us text or better a Japanese audio option.
12.AI enemies with unbalanced stats/abilities. Bullet sponges, enemies invulnerable from all but 1 type of damage, and AI who have perfect precision who can one shot you from across the map if you are "detected" even if it's through 5 freaking walls  .
13.Instant fail stealth sections.
14.QTEs pretty much in any game genre. Sometimes they work for "adventure" games like heavy rain but I loathe when I run into them in FPS/TPS.
15. Poorly optimized or none existent aim assist in a console based game where you are intended to use a controller :P. (Quantum Theory)
16. Peer to Peer game hosting in competitive multiplayer games.

Can't say I've ever touched Star Flight. Star Control is pretty simple. You have a rotating star cluster of locations. You just click where to go and which ship to send, that's it. When there you can setup a home (for more resources), a mining operation, or you can raid an enemy which turns into a 1on1 overhead pea shooter death match.

Starflight is a more primitive version of Star Control 2. It's the same game loop of having a home base that you can upgrade your ship at, going out to planets, getting resources to sell, and communicating with aliens for clues to solve the plot. The combat is utterly terrible in Starflight but it's also rarely used if you are careful; most aliens are not hostile and the hostile ones can be avoided. The communication is sort of interesting; you start with a posture (friendly, hostile, obsequies) and can then ask a series of general questions rather than the dialog tree from Star Control 2. And aliens tend to break off after a while. So getting information is a little harder than in Star Control 2. The mineral gathering is a bit more interesting; your entire ship lands on the planet and then you send out a rover to collect minerals and that rover only has a limited range. So it's a bit more deliberate than the quick in and out of Star Control 2. You also have to pay attention to your scans; land on an 8G planet and you get literally crushed upon landing.

I agree with pretty much your entire list, but fist bump on the QTE hating.

I am amused by the fact that all these complaints are applicable only to modern games.

That's because most members here only play modern games. :P

Here's one for Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys - charging up magic takes too long and the effect the charged magic produces isn't worth the wait.

Putting your government name on the title of a game. Will Harvey, David Crane, Sid Meier, Archer Maclean, Garry Kitchen.
