Wasn't the WiiU codename Project Cafe? How do you even make the effing codename lame...BogusMeatFactory wrote:Should have kept the Wii as the Revolution. Feel like it needs to be discussed as the WiiU naming was terrible as discussed. I think a 10% increase in sale with a different name is conservative. I'd go with more like 15%ish +. I had to explain the console to a 12 yr old & his mom at Wal Mart well after it came out. They obviously loved Nintendo from our talk, owned a wii, & though the U was an add on. Blew my mind to see that first hand.

Yeah I still can't believe they chose Wii over Revolution
. The Wii U naming was horrible as well. When I worked at Toys R Us for christmas a around 2 years back pretty much every time I went to the gaming/electronics area there was someone asking what the difference was
.
Re: NX Predictions Thread
I agree with you guys that the Wii is better than the N64 and GC. Not something I saw it first, but it's like... the Wii actually got better overtime. Can't say that for all of Nintendo's consoles. I still have much to discover with the Wii.
Brings me to another interesting take I have on things...
But I think this is all largely why I don't touch my N64 anymore at all. It's been a good decade or more by this point. Some single player favorites like Mario 64, the Zelda's, etc have been ported over, so those are available. But the console and most of its library? I don't know, it's almost like when a modern online game shuts down its servers. Everybody has moved on and the N64 has literally in many ways faded away.
I can never deny my incredible memories with the N64 growing up, it largely sums up most of grade school for me and defines the later 90's, but yeah. This all just kind of hit me recently that this is why the N64 is a weird distant memory, but I otherwise keep on going back to the NES, SNES, Genesis, PSX, etc stuff all the time like they never left.
I guess that got deep and weird. But I've finally figured out why the N64 is a weird one to me.

I feel that the N64 is probably the most different gaming experience I've had and probably ever will have with a console. The N64 is very "had to be there", in that a lot of game time for myself and just about any other random kid I knew back in the day, was very much about the multiplayer and gaming with parties. Four controllers and most of Nintendo's stuff offering awesome multiplayer modes. Wrestling was entering a new age with the attitude era and those games blew up as well. Goldeneye. Kart racers blowing up. etc, it just goes on forever.Sarge wrote:Yeah, the N64 saw some dark days, despite its success. It started the "Nintendo drought" we're all accustomed to by now.

Re: NX Predictions Thread
I think the PSX had the benefit of having so many RPGs on there, and those, especially the ones that tried to be mega-SNES games, have aged well. The N64 doesn't have that luxury.
You're absolutely right, it was the ultimate "had to be there" system. Most of the best games on there have been significantly one-upped over time. And while that's also true for the majority of the PSX library, it's really not for the aforementioned RPGs.

Yeah. So basically, the N64 was a monster for multiplayer couch gaming. Any 90's kid probably has many stories about it. But that's mostly what the N64 was and there's a double edged sword to that kind of focus, which they really went all in with.
Then for me on the technical side, a lot of PSX games opted for pre-rendered backdrops or sprites, while the N64 mostly went full true 3D. Well... safe to say those hand crafted sprites and backgrounds have aged way better in the long run.
I'm not sure what went wrong with the GC for me. I'm just not a fan. They got really experimental I guess and gave us some new IP's, but most of which I don't care about, and then threw out some of the weaker installments for their main franchises. But it did bless us with Metroid Prime...

I think they should call the NX the Super Sexgasm 69000, but I don't think they'll take my suggestion seriously.

Re: NX Predictions Thread
I just find it odd that they announced the NX's existence really casually back in, what, 2015? Since then, patents have leaked and the media has speculated, but technically Nintendo has given us nothing.
Then they announce the release date (March 17) but not the console and again stay silent for months.
I don't understand why they acknowledged its existence so early if they weren't going to announce anything or build any hype.
Didn't it pretty much kill off the Wii U and remind us all of Sega doing the same thing with the Saturn?

Plus the games were supported on the next two generations of consoles which really helped them stay accessible.Sarge wrote:I think the PSX had the benefit of having so many RPGs on there, and those, especially the ones that tried to be mega-SNES games, have aged well. A pipe dream would be if Nintendo eventually released something similar to Retron 5 that had full compatibility with all of their previous cartridge based systems. Even if it was just a box that offered access to their online store front and accessories to read the physical carts I think they could make a killing with it. I'm hoping the NES Classic is them testing the waters.

Re: NX Predictions Thread
It did, and that pissed me off immensely. I think what they were doing, though, is essentially a "double or nothing" type gamble. Casually drop confirmation that they're working on a new console (which, in fairness, anyone who's followed the market even casually would know already), and then drop a release window as you leak tiny little rumors here and there (I highly doubt that, of the massive plethora of NX rumors, they were ALL leaked without Nintendo's knowledge) to build suspense and anticipation.Reprise wrote:Didn't it pretty much kill off the Wii U and remind us all of Sega doing the same thing with the Saturn?
Like Spock said, sometimes wanting is not so pleasing a thing as having; build enough suspense and anticipation that people keep talking about it and speculating until you've got an extremely hyped release. It could either work out EXTRAORDINARILY well for them or completely blow up in their faces. Obviously I'm hoping for the former, but truthfully, I'm expecting the latter.
In all honestly, though, they could release a toaster oven that just shows Mario going through 1-1 of SMB to show where your bread is in the toasting process, and I'd still drop $100 on it, so my perception of the NX is a little needless; I'm going to pre-order it the day it gets unveiled no matter what it is.

Re: NX Predictions Thread
I love the idea of the NX being rumored to use cartridges. I assume they would be SD sized like 3DS games or whatnot. And I guess nowadays you can get cheap cartridges with 256GB or something? Many times more than a BD disc. Perhaps this is one advantage Nintendo could get using such hardware even if they probably won't have the most powerful system.Fragems wrote:Plus the games were supported on the next two generations of consoles which really helped them stay accessible.Sarge wrote:I think the PSX had the benefit of having so many RPGs on there, and those, especially the ones that tried to be mega-SNES games, have aged well. That is a real pipe dream though haha. I'm picturing a slick looking box that has one SUPER omega cartridge slot where everything can fit in, but I have no idea if that's physically possible.
Seriously though, that or I don't know... maybe they could be 10x more awesome and aggressive with their digital store? That's one knock I have on the Wii and U big time. I mean, I've been able to repurchase a lot of favorites and all, but they could easily be putting out way more content from their backlog than they do.
That also brings me to my greatest fear with the NX that I always bring up. I've bought a lot of VC stuff on the U, and I really don't want to have to buy them again on the NX. Please be nice Nintendo and have them cross over...
