Yeah fan made ROM editors are the way to go on PC. There are lots of Mario ones available:Ack wrote:Conversely you could also look into Super Mario Bros. X, which is a fan game that incorporates co-op and a level editor.

The closest you're gonna get to decent metroidvanias on Genesis:Nemoide wrote:I'd love to play Super Metroid but don't have an SNES... any suggestions for an alternative on Sega Genesis?
PLAY KING'S FIELD.
Re: Play THIS if you can't play THAT
Exhuminator has the right of it with the Monster World games and Phantom 2040. I was about to suggest 'em myself.

Oh man, these suggestions are so appreciated.
I had long heard of the Monster World games but had been assuming they weren't too different from the original Wonder Boy. TURNS OUT I WAS OBVIOUSLY WRONG and now I need to get them.

Monster World IV, in particular, is spectacular.
Easiest way to play them is the Monster World Collection on PS3/360/PC, although they're also separately available on the Wii VC.

Alright, 2 RPGs have eluded me due to the console of their release:
- Lucienne's Quest 3DO
- Guardian War 3DO
What should I being playing that us similar?
Perhaps JRPGS don't work too well for the thread as most share commonalities.

It's not hard to emulate 3DO. If you really want to play those games and you have a PC, it's quite doable. But, to keep the spirit of the thread going...Jagosaurus wrote:Alright, 2 RPGs have eluded me due to the console of their release:

Lucienne's Quest's closest equivalent is probably Grandia, although its battle system is most similar to Suikoden. So play both of those?
I don't know much about Guardian War. From what I've read outside its unique graphics properties it's a fairly standard SRPG in gameplay though. Seems kinda similar to a more simple Final Fantasy Tactics. Maybe somebody else will have a better suggestion.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

Monster World IV is simply wonderful. It's also one of the major inspirations for Shantae and it shows. It's one of those games we'd be hailing as an all-time classic if it had released in the west (criminally it was fully translated but never came out) The Monster World collection is well worth getting for that game alone.Sarge wrote:Monster World IV, in particular, is spectacular.

It's a shame they didn't include Dragon's Trap though.

Do you have a Saturn, Jag?
Mystaria: The Realms of Lore (also known as Blazing Heroes - Yes there are two different North American titles) is another great strategy RPG by Microcabin, the developer of Guardian War.
The suggestions for Lucienne's Quest substitutes Xumy had were good.
