Well theres your problem. Using the internet will only get you so far. You can't really know how reliable someone is going to be over the long term via e-mail, and it is really easy to flake on someone who you never met in real life and will likely never meet if shit gets hard or it turns out you don't like the script. Plus- although students work cheap/free students often lack a certain professionalism. Thats the reason that seasoned companies ask for experience. I would say that out of my graduating class maybe 7 of the people in my department were ready to work. Shit, like half didn't even really do much work while they were in school.

It sucks because you have to spend a bit to get out to them, but really the convention is really your best bet. Simply because you have to spend some cash to get out to them, it weeds out people who don't really want to work. I would avoid sandiego because it is so huge that it is mostly movie deals and that sort of thing, but all other cons are fair game.

Haha, that sucks. Closest thing we've got to one of those down here is Dragon Con. Nothing else for 500 miles...minimum.

I've been up and down the east coast for cons before when i was in college and really looking for work. Did a handful out on the west coast too. Now that i have pretty steady good jobs i don't go to that many cons anymore. I did go to new york comic con a couple weeks ago. It was amazing. People are saying that it is starting to rival sandiego comic con. If you are looking to talk to people about comics and potentially find other artists to work with, i would say that is your best con to do it. Largest number of people of all different levels of professionalism, with little to no movie bullshit to deal with.

I appreciate the information. I'd like to do some work in comics at some point, I've dabbled a bit with the script formats and written up a few partial issues, though I really haven't had the time for it. Maybe in a few years I can give it a try.

I once wrote a script for a comic once. It's posted at my site, I'm not sure how a comic script should be written but here is what I did back in 2001

please excuse the squares - the last time I updated wordpress it replace all the " (quotes) with squares on all of the pages, but not the posts.
