for comic book guys...

Post by nickfil »

If you don't know, I color comics, and i just finished up this little 6 page thing about spiderman and captain america fighting a robot lincoln called "gettysburg distress" Written by matt fraction and drawn by andy macdonald.

It is up for free on marvel's site if you want to check it out. You don't have to sign up for anything, although they try to trick you into some sign up.

i thought the marvel comic viewer made the pages look super pixilated so i added the pages to my blog too if you want to check them out without blur all over them.

Wow the digital version is really pixilated.
I am not a fan of how Marvel does their digital comics, but I am a fan of the work you did on that though.
I am basing my opinion off the samples on your site. Plus I couldn't read the words on the Marvel version anyway so I just made up my own "Hostess" style dialog since Spidey and Cap are eating what looks like snack cakes at the end.

I agree. The marvel digital comics would greatly benifit from a higher level of quality. I think the comic was also in the New York times today, but Im not exactly sure.

Funny that you mention hostess cakes. They are indeed sharing one at the end. It is even mentioned in the dialogue. A nice refrence to older comics to cap off a very campy fun script.

I was just writing my thoughts on last week's ASM, and I want to complain about how Lilly Holister's hair is colored - I am not a fan of recoloring the already inked lines a darker shade of the hair color, is this becoming the standard? I don't mind it when used on stuff like Spidey's webbing but when used on a character who isn't all colored that way it's distracting.

I wouldn't say it is becoming standard. It is really up to the colorist and then ultimately the editor. If the editor really didn't like it they would get the colorist to change it. Personally, it never really appealed to me except for really extreme circumstances where all the line art has something wild going on. Giant energy blasts or something weird happening like that.

Dude, that is pretty dang cool.
Comics, RPG's, miniatures, and now retrogaming? I guess its time to learn to go without eating...

Very cool, chief. I believe that's got to be my favorite version of Lincoln ever. Catchy title, too.

Oh, and do me a favor. Kick Bendis in the shin for screwing up Marvel. In fact, kick everybody in the shin who's been working with regular continuity since before House of M.

fun fact- Brian has no shins anymore. Marvel just keeps his head in a jar with robot spider legs. When he isn't cranking out great scripts he just blurts out the words 'monkey fucking.' This is the real side of comics wizard doesn't want you to know. The shit I've seen would blow your mind.

it is all adobe photoshop, i never touch a sheet of paper for color work. I use a wacom tablet very seldomly. Mostly just to quickly throw a few shines on the robots. 99% of it is with a mouse. It used to be that a colorist would get pages on this paper that was almost cloth-like. We would then color them using markers, and then send them to a separator who would turn what we did as best as he could into a digital file. That got phased a while back and i think the last books to be done that way were probably 2002 or 2003. And even then it was only a handful still like that. Old pros still making it work. Now it is all digital.

It goes down something like this: Matt wrote the script. Andy drew thumbnails for the pages a little bigger than postage stamp size, then blew them up to 11x17ish and finally printed them out as a very dull dull gray . Then Andy went in and inked them. He scanned them. After that he sends his digital files to marvel. They then shrink them down to the proper comic size and lay them out for the printer with guides. The letterer and I both get these properly sized black and white digital files. He letters, i color. Sometimes i color before he letters, and sometimes we work at the same time depending on the deadline. I don't ever actually see the originals unless I am hanging out with andy or something like that.
