Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows
Image

Four young tourists interested in the history of the Blair Witch arrive in Burkittsville, Maryland. Along with their tour guide, they head off into the Black Hills to visit the locals seen in the original movie. Their tour guide brings along several cameras to document anything they might find, but they don’t end up doing him much good. When the five of them wake up the next morning their campsite is trashed, the cameras (but not the film) are destroyed and no one seems to have any recollection of what happened the previous night. The rest of the movie is spent trying to piece together the five travelers missing hours.

Image
And my, what a set of missing hours they were.

Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows is almost a textbook case of how not to make a sequel. Everything about the film is fundamentally different from its predecessor. The films tone, atmosphere, story, art direction, sound direction - all of it a complete 180 from the first film. The only reason I say that it’s almost a textbook case is that they did manage to cram, hmm, about five minutes of documentary style footage into the whole thing. Beyond that, Blair Witch 2 is shot as a traditional horror movie.

Image
This is about as close to the original as you get.

The acting here ranges from passable to “I think I can see them reading off a cue card,” which doesn’t help the film get into the good graces of the viewer who’s most likely already put off by the other dramatic changes from the first movie. Not that the acting in the first film was Oscar worthy or anything, but it certainly felt more genuine than this.

It also doesn’t help that the characters all come off as annoying twats with poor judgment skills (Oh, you’re upset that she miscarried? WTF? Where was this concern five minutes ago when she sitting next to you drinking and smoking everything within reach, hm?).

To be fair, this is an affliction that plagues many a horror movie character, but there seemed to be a much higher propensity for ‘stupiditis’ cases here than per the usual.

Image
Now, now. Don’t cry. It’s not your fault. You were just written that way.

That said, I actually liked the movie. Sure it’s got a 13% on Rotten Tomatoes, but I honestly didn’t think it was that bad. Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m in no way saying this film was successful in what it was trying to achieve, but it does have its moments. The story is serviceable and moves at a brisk pace (though I think some scenes should have been left on the cutting room floor), the psychological elements are a nice touch and the whole thing just has a darkly humorous tone that I rather enjoy.

Its biggest sin is that it’s just not scary. The film is so ‘traditional’ that all the suspense feels familiar and even the twist at the climax doesn’t garner much more than a shrug and a ‘bummer.’

Image
The second biggest sin is that there is no “book of shadows.” You lied to
me, you bastards.

Poor Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows never had a chance. While the first one was an indie darling, the second had so much studio meddling that it killed any chance it might have had to fly out of the nest and become its own full-fledged franchise. I know those poor little studio executives just want to help by making films more marketable, but every time I hear that I’m reminded of a phrase that starts with “The Road to Hell…” Perhaps if Blair Witch 2 had been left in the hands of its rather competent director or even if it had had been its own stand-alone film with no connection to the first Blair Witch, than it would have fared better. But all the drastic changes from the original mark it for distain, which is quite sad, as it’s really a rather interesting commentary on internet culture before anything like that became popular.

If you enjoy psychological horror films than there’s worse way to spend an hour and a half. Just make sure you set your expectations at reasonable levels.

So I haven't watched it in years but I'd recommend the commentary track for Blair Witch 2. The director's basically complaining about how awful the producers are the whole time.
I think Blair Witch 2 was the first R-rated horror movie I saw in theaters; I was 14 at the time and COMPLETELY loved it. I mean, it has supernatural violence AND boobs AND a super-hot goth babe! But a few years later I tried revisiting it and realized what a dumb mess it was.

Yeah, Blair Witch 2 has flaws (many, many flaws), but I've seen movies far more deserving of the hate this film gets. It's not necessarily a bad movie. It's just not a good Blair Witch movie.

BTW, my fist R-rated movie was Gothica. Man, what a trip.

I enjoyed the Blair Witch 2 write ups...I understand it is a very divisive movie, and I may have to see it sometime.

.....

Last night, my wife and I watched:

Image

The Pact (2012). It is a solid haunted house film that goes in a unexpected direction at the end. (It heads into giallo territory, which: (1) I wasn't expecting; and (2) is a good thing.) It is by no means the greatest modern horro film, but it has enough solid scares, disturbing imagery to justify a recommendation. (It also has an attractive lead, and the scene where she escapes her hotel room in bed clothes is pretty spectacular for a variety of reasons.) Finally, the film is currently streaming on Netflix; so, those of you with the service can watch it instantly.

Tonight, my wife and I watched:

Image

The Body Snatcher (1945). It is an exceptionally solid black-and-white horror film directed by a young Robert Wise. (He would later go on to direct movies like The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Haunting, Star Trek, The Sound of Music, and Westside Story, among others.) It is based off a short story by Robert Louis Stevenson, which, in turn is based off a series of murders in early 19th Century Edinburgh. In it, the inimitable Boris Karloff stars as a cabman, grave robber, and blackmailer who delivers bodies to a medical school for study. He goes to great lengths to obtain the bodies needed for the profession, his employers go to great lengths to prevent any association with any untoward business, and he doesn't let them forget it. The film is not particularly scary, but it is incredibly atmospheric. It is also exceptionally well-scripted, and all of the actors - and particularly Karloff - turn in great performances. I highly recommend it.

Knocked out a few more:

30 Days of Night

Image

This movie is even better than I remembered. It takes place in Barrow, Alaska. I did some digging and Barrow is real place and is the northernmost town in the US. There are no roads in, planes and sled dogs only, and they do experience 30 days of darkness. Recipe for disaster if attacked by vampire and that's exactly how it plays out.

This is a survival movie done well. Survive the cold. Survive the dark. Survive the onslaught of the vampires. Outlast them 30 days until the sun comes up and live.

See below, the vampires are creepy as hell and win best vamp award for me with Stake Land as a close second. Watch this one if you haven't already!

Image

Tales from the Crypt Episodes:
Image

- The Reluctant Vampire

A vampire working at a blood bank may lose his job. This one is fairly ligh hearted. No idea why Van Helsing was portrayed so odd though.

- Loved to Death

Typical love potion story. They could've done more with the creepy apartment manager. They went for nudity over gore in this one. Not in the least bit scary or unsettling.

Overall, more campy fun in both of these episodes. On to VHS #2, each tape holds 3 episodes from varying seasons.

Killer Klowns From Outer Space
Image

A couple of collage kids macking out at the local lovers lane spot a shooting star in the sky and decide to follow it. After committing an act of trespass, they finally find the object from the sky, but instead of an asteroid they find an oddly placed circus tent in the middle of the woods.

Image
Yeah, that’s normal.

Displaying a lack of common sense that would make someone with an IQ of 10 facepalm, the guy manages to convince his reluctant girlfriend to tag along….or he’ll just leave her out there in the woods by herself. What an a$$.

Inside they find a strange reactor of some sort and a room filled with what appears to be sacks of cotton candy.

Image
No you dumbass, that’s not how cotton candy is stored. Have you never been to a carnival?

While there they soon discover the Killer Klowns and just barely manage to escape their clutches before the Klowns follow them into town.

Image

Killer Klowns From Outer Space is a campy blast from the past filled with good practical effects, dated CGI-

Image

-and a distinctly 80’s sense of humor, including a few very non PC lines that would probably get nixed today in anything that wasn’t an Adam Sandler movie. It’s filled with poor writing, even poorer acting, and is nowhere close to being scary. But to hold all that against it would be ignoring what the movie was trying to do, and what it was trying to do was be nothing more than a fun, campy ride.

Sure the characters are forgettable and the acting is horrible, but that’s not the focus of the film. The focus here is undoubtedly the Klowns themselves and their inventive ways of knocking people off. For such a low budget movie they do a spectacular job of delivering. The detail put into the practical Klown effects are impressive, even by today’s standards. What the creative team of Chiodo brothers might have lacked in story and direction, they more than made up for in creative set and character design. The Klowns themselves are a wonderful combination of cute and silly, yet still manage to maintain a level of creepy menace that an impressive feat for anyone to pull off.

Image
If you weren’t already creeped out by clowns before…

Yet for a plot that’s filled with such ridiculous concepts as people being eaten by shadow puppets-

Image

-it still also manages to throw in some deeply disturbing imagery. One Klown tries to coax a girl out of a restaurant while holding a mallet behind his back. Another punches the head of cocky biker clean off his head. There’s also a scene where one of the protagonists is attacked by something that looks like it was taken straight out of a Nightmare on Elm Street film.

Image

But probably the most disturbing moment is the ‘puppet scene’ in which one bulbous Klown turns the deputy into a ventriloquists dummy.

Image

Image
With scenes like this and all the swearing, I’m kind of impressed with the PG-13 rating.

And somehow, despite all of this, the film still manages to add just enough genuine humor to make you laugh. Trying to escape from the house? The Klowns have got you covered.

Image
Now there’s an idea for a ‘Hunks of Firefighting’ calendar no one ever wants to see.

Killer Klowns From Outer Space is the type of movie you just turn off your brain and have fun with. The very title itself suggests that it was made solely for the purpose of being campy fun, and in that regard it delivers in spades. Despite its ludicrous premise, its quality surpasses all expectations and at the same time pays homage to the old 50’s drive in monster movies of yore. It manages to be both disturbing and funny and explores the idea of the fear of clowns in a uniquely twisted and wonderful way. For fans of campy horror and sci-fi, this is a movie that deserves a rental. Or, at $5, it might currently be cheaper to buy the blu-ray on Amazon. I hear the transfer is impressive.

Killer Klowns! That movie is definitely a lot of fun.

.....

Speaking of fun movies, my wife and I watched:

Image

A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985) on Netflix last night. It tremendously fun, and I thought Freddy was much more menacing in this film. (I also thought that it was at least as good as the original, but I may be in the minority there...) The practical effects were great, and the film has a great ending. (It also has quite a bit of subtext, if you are looking for it.) I enjoyed it more than any of the other films in the series, and I recommend it to anyone looking for a classic monster movie.

(To be fair, I have only seen a few films in this series - i.e., A Nightmare on Elm Street, A Nightmare on Elm Street 2, and Wes Craven's New Nightmare. How do the others hold up to this one? How about the remakes?)

See #3, Dream Warriors. Great movie. The rest are kinda blah with some entertaining bits here and there. Still love them cuz, well, Freddy, but they're not essential viewing by any means. From 3 onward, Freddy becomes more of that wisecracking anti-hero that Craven tried to dismantle with New Nightmare.

I thought the remake was just okay. No worse than any of the sequels, really.

The subtext in #2 is barely "sub." Makes the movie a cool watch though.

Man, Killer Clowns really creeped me out back in the day.

Scream – 1996
Image

This wasn’t on my original list but Mrs. Jaosaurus will actually watch this series, and I enjoy them (Especially 1 and 4). Here we go,put on your 1996 hat… and doc martins, weave belt, and white shirt.

There will be spoilers in here, but it’s 19 years old, come on. This movie was huge when it came out. I’ve heard a lot of “hardcore” horror fans hate on it today. Sure it lead to a lot of crap copycat movies but in many ways Scream is responsible for the 90s rebirth of horror. Bottom line, the horror landscape today would be much different if this hadn’t come out. Those people claiming it isn’t gorey, there isn’t nudity, there is too much humor, etc… remember the MPAA rated this movie NC17 numerous times before finally giving it a R rating. The fact you had high school kids brutally slaughtering other kids on screen was pushing bounds back then.

I was in middle school when this released, my sister was in high school and I had to wait on this to come out on VHS while she snuck into a theater. I was extremely jealous I missed out. Won’t lie, it scared me back then when I finally rented it. Today it is more nostalgic than anything but I appreciate it for what it did for the genre. I also extremely enjoy the self-awareness and nods to other horror franchises. This cleverness becomes a staple of the series.

The opening Drew Barrymore scene is iconic today. The fact they killed such a popular actress in the first 10 minutes really sets the tone for the movie. You don’t know who will die next. I’ve watched this the past three Halloween marathons, I think I just added it to my yearly list. Recommended.

Reportedly Caller ID usage went up threefold after this movie and famous scene below. Probably some correlation versus causation in the statistic but fun fact.
