Underground Gamer: Retro Download Source

 After going on mad downloading sprees for years, I took a long break from collecting retro gaming files from around the Net. This is mostly due to the lack of a reliable resource and/or a good selection of things I didn’t already have.

However, this past month I was blessed with a membership to Underground Gamer. Underground Gamer is a private BitTorrent tracker that is only used for classic gaming files. Their rules reflect my personal convictions as they do not allow ISOs of systems that are for systems that are currently in retail channels. Instead you will find a great abundance of ROMs and ISOs for your favorite classic systems in addition to Soundtracks, classic PC games, manual scans, and video clips.

You can easily find nearly complete collections of ROM/ISO sets from nearly every system including the Sega Saturn (modchip or swap trick needed), TurboGrafx 16, and many other obscure systems. The community does a great job collaborating to put these “Gold”-status torrents together. (In fact I just uploaded a handful of Saturn games that happened to be defective or missing from the “Complete” collection)

What really makes Underground Gamer really work is its website and tracker system. First of all, it rewards you for participating in uploading and leaving your completed torrents running. Your user ID has a score assigned to it based on your upload to download ratio. If you have a high score, you can have access to newer releases sooner, are allowed to have more simultaneous downloads, and ability to give out invites to your friends. If you do not upload responsibly, you a demoted and you may actually lose your membership.

Because of this, it can be challenging to sign up for an account. Either you wait for somebody to invite (check the forums here for any invites) you or you keep checking back to see if the site has any open spots from people that got kicked off for lack up uploading. While this may seem like a pain initially, it really keeps the site in peak performance.

“If you can’t maintain an account in there it is because you’re either a cheater, a troll, a greedy downloader, can’t read rules, or are downright stupid.” El Diego

Or put it another way – you just need to have some patience at the start. If you get an invite have a look at what they have and then weigh it up. You should come to the conclusion that for what UG have a little bit of patience is no problem.
Try to hang on in there until a Golden Torrent weekend which is about 4 times a year. Once this arrives you should be able to get a 1:1 ratio.

At least, do Not go to underground-gamer.com again.
This site is illegal.
You had better report to Anti-Piracy.

JonGrimes says:

Why bother with such illegal websites when the legal offer is getting better everyday ? Ever heard of GoG or DotEmu ?

Common Sense says:

lol @ “this site is illegal” comments. While you’re at it, report thepiratebay, demonoid, and many many MANY other torrent trackers while you’re at it. Yeah right, as if anybody here is going to do that.
Just be honest and say you were banned from UG for not reading the rules; behaving like a crying child here with these false comments makes you look stupid.

UG doesn’t charge money at all. It’s called DONATIONS. Look that word up in the dictionary since clearly you don’t know the meaning.

GoG and DotEmu only have old PC games. UG has much more than that. OST, magazines, old cartridge/floppy based systems, old CD consoles and Japan-only systems, which will never be sold on those sites. People who want to pay for old games, do so. The rest don’t care and will download it for free from anywhere on the internet.

The rules make any no sense there’s so many duplicate of the same Files or torrents.contain the same thing when Rules say files that similar should be deleted.the Mods are slow and can’t be depended on plus upload Raito is fixed unfairly to screw its own user base?

We know what it means but we’ll don’t need a lesson from a moron like you?

Nyukki says:

I don’t get what people find so difficult about UG’s ratio system. Keeping a good ratio is easy.

All you do is click on the ‘Torrents’ text box at the top left of the page and hit ‘Return’, then the first five torrents displayed are freeleach and they offer 5 new ones every Sunday.

Just download all of these and seed, your ratio will skyrocket in no time!

Dulebug says:

@Nyukki

half the fucking idiots won’t seed even stuff . or even then torrent is dead good fucking luck getting assholes at the site to request to seed anything?

racketboy says:

@Dulebug Because they are all there to do your bidding…

Dulebug says:

@racketboy

yeah right no one up to keep torrent ‘s alive?

racketboy says:

Depends on how old it is and what the demand was. If there is a huge torrent and there was months or years without demand, you can’t expect someone to keep it around. Have to keep the original files in tact for a long amount of time can be a big hassle. Creating a new torrent sometimes would be a better option if someone still has them.

Dulebug says:

i was saying may been incorrect to apply. sometimes the same stuff is include with various of collection’s. new or old . just have to wait and see if one replaces the old upload or not.?

racketboy says:

Well my opinion is that you should be grateful for what is available as it’s all a donation of time and energy. A lot of the people that complain about this stuff expect way to much to be just handed to them.

Dulebug says:

i don’t i just down what good stuff already upload. to be lost . giving donation a good way to keeping sites alive form lack of money to run off a server or hard drive?

Kiribati says:

Hey assholes i can leech 700kb on a piratebay torrent, on 3 fucking days i only leech 480mb! Shame and untrust website, i prefer to make 1000000 fake accounts and get all the stuff by forcing the website.
On piratebay 700kb in 3 days i lecch 5gb! So fuck you all it says about good of UG.

owningyourlogic says:

Underground Gamer is the dumbest site ever made. The net was created to share information back in the day,now everyone asking for something in return. The net is free,the games,videos,music were created by someone else (not you,you dont own the game just the license to use it like a car) so you’re using something not made by you through free space (the net) and say we gotta do this or that to get those games/movies etc?

The stuff is hard to find as it is and they go and make it harder to find?Ya that makes perfect sense.Someone clap for UG’s stupidity.The whole seeding system is retarded as i had a seed up for 2 days,no one leeched off it though so my ratio didnt move.

Dejunai says:

R.I.P

@owningyourlogic

For 20 dollars downloads were unlimited, no seed ratio required……. tight ass

Hikari says:

It was awesome, I miss them. Indeed they were very dedicated on keeping complete collections and had tons of rare gems. Their community was friendly, what’s rare on private trackers.

Sadly today all those private trackers are gone. Their community were mostly toxic and it was damn hard to keep a good ratio. Many ppl had seedboxes that ate all available upload demand, and we’d have to either keep paying to not be banned or get a seedbox and find something they alrdy didn’t have to upload. Some of them even blocked “the plebe” from uploading content, so that only them could do it! UG was different from that.

Anyway, today private trackers are much easier to manage. They have some freeleach torrents that our download doesn’t count but our upload do. Just have a NAS running a BT client and keep seeding and our ratio is maintained. In last case, we can “donate” for some extra upload to fix our ratio, instead of the monthly donation that meant nothing for old private tracker admins.
