Super Mario Bros 3 nes Vs. snes

Post by jackspicer »

ive been playing smb 3 on a snes-dreamcast emulation thing and besides the lag its surprizingly fun, i still play nes mario on a weekly basis, and the snes graphical and audio facelift is a nice change. i think im going to buy the Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World cart even tho its a lot of money. Do any of you have an opinion on which version you like better? and does the snes smb3 play at a nice frame rate?

I've always opted for either the SNES or GBA version since their releases. The original NES is still good, but the control feels tighter on the newer versions.

It's pretty much flawless on SNES. It's a little gimped on GBA, what with smaller screen size (showing less of the stage at any given time) and lower quality audio, but the GBA version did add a little voice work and audio effects, if I remember right. Or that may have been SMWorld 1 and 2. I forget.

I had Super Mario All Stars as a kid, and that was where I first met Mario, so going back and playing any of them on NES feels strange to me. Mario Bros 3 especially! The GBA ports are handy if your stuck on a train/plane/car and need a fix, but you can't beat the big screen!

The new SFX is the reason I can't stand the GBA ports, all those "mama mia" or Yoshi's noises and Link's screams, After a few minutes of gameplay I reset looking for an option to remove the voices, found none and never played them again

I thought I was the only one that was pissed off at those damn SFX. They were cool at first, but they got annoying fast. I don't even understand why their there (I'm guessing to show off the GBA's audio capabilities), but they still sound like shit.

The SNES port is pretty darn near the NES original in gameplay and challenge and better looking and sounding.

The GBA port is easier in some places, has a cramped screen, and has the annoying voices, but is otherwise still a fine game.

I prefer the NES or SNES versions, however.

I'd say the SNES. It's a bit more colorful and smooth looking than the NES. Also the SNES controller is much better for navigating those tight jumps. I also like having the run/grab button right above the jump button rather than to the side, it's much better on the thumb.
