Controller Converters for Gamecube

Post by Lakster37 »

Lately I've been looking into controller converters for the Gamecube. I plan on daisy-chaining a few together to get different controllers, but (since there aren't any other options, really) all of them start with a Playstation controller to Gamecube controller. I already have the Cube Joybox by Mayflash which works great, but with one (very annoying) layout problem. I searched around some and every other Playstation to Gamecube converter that I could find had the same button mapping problem. Below illustrates the problem:

Image
Cube Joybox Button Mapping

Code: Select all

PS2   GCN
X     A
□     B
Δ     Y
O     X

I could see how someone just passively trying to compare the two button layouts may come up with that button mapping, but for anyone who's actually played a Gamecube game, it makes absolutely no sense. The "first primary"/accept button (GCN A/PS2 X) as well as the "top" secondary (GCN Y/PS2 Δ) are correct, but the other two are switched from what they should be. The "second primary"/decline button is GCN "B" and PS2 "O" while the GCN "X" and PS2 "□" are more of an auxiliary button. Granted, these are just two button differences, but when you start daisy-chaining, this can start to really mess up button layouts for other controllers.

Desired Button Mapping

Code: Select all

PS2   GCN
X     A
O     B
Δ     Y
□     X

So, as to the general point of this topic: does anyone know of any better converters to play controllers on the Gamecube that map buttons in a better way? Has anyone found any converters for the Gamecube besides PSX/2?

Not very likely. The reason there are so many convertors for PS to other systems is that there are so many PS controllers out there plus PS1 and PS2 controllers are pretty much interchangeable.

The answer is the Game Elements adapter, although good luck finding one in 2013.

Agree, the Gamecube Red B and Grey X buttons are oddly placed in comparison to the Playstation primary and secondary buttons. By redoing the traces inside the adapter, the two buttons could be solder modded. At least some Gamecube games can be reconfigured in the game setup menu. Other games already follow the face button direction placement layout, GC Midway Treasures Robotron for example.

MAYFLASH CUBE JOYBOX
GameCube ..... PS1/PS2
A ................... X
B ................... Square
Y ................... Triangle
X ................... Circle
Z ................... R1
R ................... R2
L ................... L2
C-stick ......... Right Analog
D-pad .......... D-pad
Left Analog ... Left Analog

I really like the Cube Joybox, It has a undocumented capability of certain Playstation controllers DPad and four Face Buttons also working as the Analog Sticks of the Gamecube Controller. This allows use of an Arcade Stick on GC games that would not normally work with just digital controls. Even better, the pre Duel Shock PS1 Flightstick which has limited Playstation game support works with every single Gamecube and Wii GC Controller game! :shock:

Your video was not clear exactly which Playstation Face button correlates with which Gamecube Face Button. You mentioned GC B button as PS X, yet the icons that flash up in the video match to the same layout as the Cube Joybox. Could you list all the buttons out for the Game Elements adapter as I did for the Cube Joybox above?

Sure. As I think I indirectly said, it's like this, although good luck finding one of these adapters now.

Game Elements PS2 to Xbox/GC/USB

PS2→→→GameCube →→→Xbox
Dpad→→→Dpad→→→Dpad
X→→→A→→→A
□→→→B→→→X
△→→→Y→→→Y
O→→→X→→→ B
Left Stick→→→Control Stick→→→Left Stick
Right Stick→→→C-Stick→→→Right Stick
L1→→→Z [same as R1]→→→White
R1→→→Z [same as L1]→→→Black
L2→→→L→→→Left Trigger
R2→→→R→→→Right Trigger
L3→→→N/A→→→Left Stick Click
R3→→→N/A→→→Right Stick Click
Start→→→Start →→→Start
Select→→→N/A→→→Back

Again, thats PS2 = GC = Xbox

X = A = A
Square = B = X
Triangle = Y = Y
O = X = B

Thanks for posting, Looks the same layout as the Cube Joybox. Ah well, a simple solder retrace mod could fix primary and secondary button to match the Gamecube controller layout. Out of curiousity does an Arcade Stick emulate the analog sticks with the Game Elements adapter? Not the DPad but the Analog and C sticks of the Gamecube controller.

How do Gamecube controlled Wii games work out with the Game Elements? The pinnacle would be Wii Metal Slug which does not support a Classic Controller but does work with the Gamecube controllers and adapted PS1 and PS2 Arcade Sticks.

If you happen to own the PS1 Flightstick, does it also work on that adapter? This allows over an additional 600 Gamecube games to work compared to just the 27 Playstation games.

Wait a minute. I'm confused.

Is the point of this thread saying that Lakster37 wants the PS2 controller to be mapped like THIS?

PS2 = GC
X = A
Square = X
Triangle = Y
O = B

Is that he's saying? WTF?

It makes sense since the Gamecube primary buttons are A and B. This would correlate better in some games if matched to the Playstation primary buttons of X and O which the adapters do not.

This of course would depend on the game, some follow the "DPad" layout of the four face buttons which places the Gamecube B button as a lefty and the Gamecube X Button as a righty. These work well with the existing layout to the Playstation controller.

I prefer the existing layout myself, the Dpad arrangement is better. As for the other games where the primary buttons are flipped, some of the games can be adjusted in the menu. Maybe a mini double toggle switch mod might be the fix to get both features?

@ Satoshi - Any luck on the other controllers I mentioned with your adapter?

I'm VERY confused.

Why would anyone want the GameCube's B button to be mapped to the PS2's O button? That makes no sense whatsoever.

The PS2's primary buttons are NOT X and O - they're X and Square. (unless you're talking about Japanese exclusives). That's just like the SNES's Y and B are the "primary" buttons.

No, of course not. Arcade sticks always are based off the dpad. Arcade sticks are digital controllers. Analog sticks are fundamentally the opposite of an arcade stick.

As you'd expect, but I can't think of anything worth playing for Wii that you'd want to use either a GameCube or a PS2 controller with.

The Wii build of Metal Slug Anthology is garbage. Do yourself a favor and get the PS2 version and rid yourself of the Wii version. The PS2 does not suffer from slowdown, bad control, or sound emulation issues like the Wii version. It wasn't rushed like the Wii build.

Yeah you could in theory hook that up to a GameCube, but that's a digital controller keep in mind.

Actually with the Cube Joybox, my Blaze Twinshock which is digital DOES emulate the analog sticks of the Gamecube controller.

I have PS1, PS2 4/5/Anthology/3D, GBA, and Wii versions of Metal Slug and enjoy them all. Well the PS2 3D version maybe not as much. I mentioned Wii Metal Slug since it does not offer Classic Controller support but does work with a Gamecube controller. With the right adapter at least there is an Arcade Stick option, handy if one only owns the Wii console.

There are great Wii games that benefit when using a Playstation controller such as Nights Into Dreams and Sin and Punishment. The Wii game Geometry Wars is the best version and works so much better with a Twin Arcade Stick. The undocumented feature is the DIGITAL STICK EMULATES THE ANALOG CONTROLS! The link below is for the Mayflash Classic Controller adapter, the Mayflash Cube Joybox has the same results. :idea:

Actually it is Analog with a selectable emulated digital option. Click my Quote Link above for a look at some ANALOG games that work beautiful with a Playstion Flightstick. I can use the stick with Gamecube games that did not work on the identical PS2 version. Various flying type of GC games offer true analog mode with it, a very nice discovery! The best was getting Wii Skycrawlers to fly with the Sony Flightstick, made possible with the Cube Joybox! :D
