Gamecube 'Authorised for Rental' Game Versions

Post by lukey52 »

Hi,

Firstly, forgive me if this is not the appropriate forum but I couldn't see where else I should post.

Anyway was clearing out some old gamecube stuff and came across an 'Authorised for Rental' copy of Mario Party 5. I have been looking about the net but I can't really find much on the topic other than the obvious, was produced for a company authorised by Nintendo to rent games to people.

I guess it's kind of like the crappy plastic PS1 rental games although I've checked eBay and I don't see a single example of a rental gamecube game for sale (or sold) worldwide (looking on eBay.co.uk) apart from a sealed Windwaker Rental which has an asking price of over £1,500. Normal sealed copies are only at around £150 so I have no idea if he is just being very unrealistic or it genuinely is that hard to find.

If anyone has an info on it or perhaps an idea of its value I'd love to know. I assume that rental only runs would have been fairly limited. As it's an English only disk/manual I would conclude it was from a run only for the UK rental market and there can't have been that many officially licensed to rent places.

I have included a few pictures so you can see the differences. The holographic sticker on the disk appears to be an official Nintendo seal of approval which says 'Authorised for Rental' with the Nintendo logo under it and from what I gather was put on the disk in the factory.

Different countries have different laws on licensing for sale and rental. That is a PAL copy of the game the OP is talking about. I have a PAL PS2 game and it says "Home Use Only" on it meaning no rentals. I have some Japanese games that say things like "For sale and consumer use in Japan only. Commercial use and rental are prohibited." Yet there is wackiness like audio CD rentals in Japan. I also have HK DVDs that say renting is prohibited as well.

As for value differences, rental copies would be less numerous than retail ones, so if there is demand from set completionists I could see rental ones, especially complete and in good condition being worth more.

Yeah, I have a PS2 game that's a bit like that. There's no manual, the controls are on the back of the case, and there's a sticker on the disc. It's the Fatal Fury collection. Or maybe they were just lazy while producing the game.

That looks like custom rental chain artwork. What's in the copyright blurb at the bottom?

It's the seizure warning, which is normally found in the instruction book. Adding it here, since I didn't get it in the pic, underneath the seizure warning, it lists the game genre (fighting) and the number of players (1-2) in a little box
