repairing, modding and custom painting a Nintendo64 TUTORIAL

Post by zoki64 »

Hi,
Nearly a year ago I have painted my NES. Some guys on the forum requested I should do a tutorial on how to paint a game console.

Here is my NES:

A few days ago a guy sold me an ice blue N64 with all hookups for only 10€. The bad thing is that the case is in very bad condition.

The first thing Im going to repair is the cover. I will scratch build the missing part of the cover out of plastic stiren.

The broken case will be easy to repair. I will glue it together and when the glue is dry I will use some body filler to completely fix the area.

I know that most of you guys will not aggre with my color choice.
I will paint the console with auto air`s "porn star pink". Im still thinking about spraying a thin (transparent) coat of ghost blue pearl over the pink to give it more of the flip flop or chameleon effect.

I started block sanding the case with 220 grit sand paper and then moved to 500 and 800 grit sand paper.

The case after block snading with 220 grit. I have filled the holes with cianokol and then sandet away the remaining filler/cianokol to get a perfect surface.

I have removed the plastic behind the N64 logo and replaced it with some polystyrol. I have glued aluminium foil onto the polystyrol so the light can spread out and evenly light up the logo.

This is not finished. I still have to play with it to get it perfect.

I agree. Your NES was excellent. I'm excited to see how this turns out.

In addition to the link, maybe include a pic of your beautiful finished NES in the OP? A great tease pic of how well the N64 project will be professionally done. That NES is a testament of your skills in custom painting. I think some readers may not click the link and realize the expertise you have.

Color choice is radical, reminds me of some of the custom cars I see at a local car show. Eagerly looking forward to future posts.

Once you get the N64 all wrapped up, maybe copy paste the entire process in the OP? A Mod could move this informative thread to the "Guides Page.

Can you reduce the pics a little so the post doesn't stretch the screen? A pain to follow along the text scrolling left to right. Mac iPhoto or PC Infraview can easily resize your pics.

EDIT
Ah, you added the NES, and fixed the pics. :D
For a second I though my reply was on the old page.
That immaculate NES is really an eye opener!

Looking forward to seeing how this one carries on. Good luck (although from the look of your nes job it doesn't look like you need it :) ) Cant wait to see the finished 64.
I haven't slept for ten days, because that would be too long.

Here is the console painted white because the pink colour requires it as a base.
I replaced the red LED with a bright white LED. I sprayed the transparent plastic (that is on the bottom of the console for the LED) with very thinned black paint because I didnt want it to be too bright when the LED is on.

I think that this is as good as it can get. The logo is bright enought and I didnt lost any contrast in the colours.

very nice. Like what you did to it.
Just a small pointer. This would bother me, maybe it doesnt for you, but a piece of electrical tape on the inside will cover up those two distracting light holes nicely. :)
