I Found a 1983 AV Famicom for 5 bucks!

Post by hashiriya1 »

So I was game hunting and in some shops they have a "Junk Box".
Broken systems, games, and peripherals. I usually take a quick peek inside
because sometimes they have a hidden gem. I saw this famicom in there
and didn't think anything of it since there are usually lots of broken famicoms
in these boxes. Something caught my eye, I saw the composite cables sticking
out. Upon further inspection, I noticed it is a modded Famicom.

It was only 500 yen, so if it didn't work the least I can do is open it up and learn
how to mod a famicom. I got home a fired it up, and it worked! So there had to be a catch.
The catch was Controller 1's buttons don't work and DOWN on the D-pad is broken.
So I did a quick remedy by using my wireless famicom controller. The system works perfectly.
I was so happy. I will replace the broken controller eventually, but the wireless or the HORI one is fine for now.
For those who have never seen the Famicom wireless controller, you can connect a 2nd
controller to it.

Did famicoms not come with composite ports? And is the thing modded for stereo or just routing mono to two audio ports? IIRC there's a stereo mod for the NES that will separate the square wave channels from the rest. Always wondered if that was worth doing, considering that the games were made for mono.

The original Famicom didn't support composite cables. Later on Nintendo made a second model of Famicom, often referred to as the A/V Famicom because of the composite cable support. The A/V Famicom looks just like the American "top loader" model except the American version did not support composite cables, for some strange reason.
