Talk of gameboy games has lured me in to these forums. I love the original gameboy, but playing and collecting for it seem a bit niche. Not many people seem to share the love, or appreciate the system, so I'm really glad to see gameboy discussion here.
Even Nintendo let the 20th anniversary go by without even a mention. I thought they'd jump at a cash in (i would have gone crazy for anniversary themed tat).
I find it amazing that even the worst Game and Watches can go for £30, yet rare and obscure gameboy games can be left on e-bay to finish with zero bids at a few pennies. I've been picking up gameboy games for 2 or 3 years now, and I still see the occasional game appear that I've never heard of.. and there are a LOT of good, obscure games. Cartridges are a good size for collecting, and have a baseball card kind of feel to them. You can fit a decent collection into a shoebox. Playing gameboy really deserves to be a more popular hobby, but whilst it isn't, I'll quite happily pick up bargains!
Essentials....
Best gameboy game of all time is Tetris, it's still the best puzzle game ever devised. I don't think anyone in the whole world needs to be told this

Other greats (many already mentioned):
Shadow Warrior (Ninja Gaiden: Shadow in the US). The music to this game is simply amazing. It's easier than the megaman games, which is a real plus as it means I can actually play it without throwing my console to the floor in rage.
Catrap, Mole Mania, Radar Mission and Fortified Zone, from the top of my head, are other games I like. Wario Land, Wario Blast, Great Greed... oh and the absolutely mighty Mario's Picross. Heiankyo Alien is a great maze game I finished the other day (I picked up the sequal - Booby Boys - not played it yet, but looks promising).
There's some nice japan-only games in my collection that I enjoy... Zas, Peetan, Cave Story, Samurai Spirits (nettou samurai spirits zankuro musouken - big improvements over Shodown. A real shame there was no western release), Noobow. Ninja Spirit was released in Japan but never came out anywhere else. Then there are a load of japanese games I'm still looking to pick up like fortified zone 2, burning paper, Picross 2 etc.
Anyway... log live the gameboy love.
