Well, it should be fast enough for save data. Hopefully the slow speeds of SD cards prevent the Wii U from having DLC.

You realize that they aren't in a position where they can create a system that won't allow for DLC and still get third party support, right? If you want a COD game for your new system in this day and age, you better be able to sell the map packs also.

Sucks but that's the way it is. You don't have to buy DLC, but hoping that they won't allow it is just inane.

SD cards, however, are not SSDs.

I figured they used the same technology and would be pretty much the same. I have used SD cards and flash thumb drives and everything seemed to work fine.

They're the same in that sense that they both use flash memory. Otherwise they're quite different.

If you remember, say, the Iomega Jaz drive, the "disk" in that was essentially a HDD platter. That didn't make a Jaz disk (or drive as a whole) the same thing as a HDD.

SD cards are a fraction of the speed of an SSD, aren't made to spread out the read/write wear, or other optimizations. They're just made to be tiny to fit into cameras/phones/etc. Using one like a HDD will likely wear it out fast.

If the games I am interested in (mostly Nintendo 1st party games) end up having DLC with various restrictions and bullshit, I probably won't be able to buy it. As for shitty games like CoD and whatnot, I don't give a fuck about how much bullshit they have. I have no interest in them either way.

I fear DLC for first party Nintendo games is all but inevitable. "It's money left on the table."

I have 3 machines that do dvd and one that does bluray plugged into my main tv already, plus I have another system that play dvds in my bedroom, and two laptops. I really have no use of anything else that plays dvds. As it is I only really use my PS3 for movies because it's the best of the bunch. I know not everyone that Nintendo is targeting has that much tech laying around, but I don't think I've seen anyone without a dvd player in years.

Cause some of us like the idea of having only one machine below our TV. I gave away my DVD player once I got a PS3. And since I'll probably be moving around plenty in a few years, and I'll probably give my PS3 to my dad to use as a Blue Ray player, I'd love my next console to be able to play DVDs and Blue Rays.

And the thing is, that if Nintendo doesn't bother to support DVD and Blue Ray, you know that they are so stingy that they'll also not have proper online support, a proper browser, and of course a proper shop.... Nintendo would really thrive as a 3rd party developer, with the right to make their own peripherals. But I think they are very out of touch with the reality of the modern tech world right now. People love having all in one devices, and people love the internet. Both of those are things Nintendo rejects....

I wish the best for them, cause I love their games, but honestly, I don't get why the 3DS does LESS than an iphone. I don't care for the phone part of course, but why can't it have a proper app store, awesome internet browser, awesome mp3 player, movie player, and ect. ect.

You know what I don't get someone who wants everything in one. If my DVD player dies I still have a video game console, if my game console player dies I still have a DVD player. What do you have? Nothing. If someone steals your iphone you are missing an mp3 player, phone, gaming, internet browser and whatever else it is to you.

That's overlooking secondary uses, and convenience.

It's probably pretty rare that a device dies, or is stolen, or whatever. For the vast majority of the time, a console that can do more than just play games is simply flexible. Maybe it's not a big deal in the living room - but a kid with just one console in their bedroom might appreciate that it plays DVDs too.
Or you could look at it using your same argument - if your DVD player fails, or has problems playing a particular disc, having backup devices in form of consoles is nice. Instead of having one DVD player, you have several, even if you aren't using them as that most of the time.

Mobile devices are far more about convenience. It's much easier to bring a smartphone that slips in your pocket than to fit a portable console, an MP3 player, a PDA, and a phone. The more realistic annoyance is battery life, at least right now. Again, you have the flexibility argument. An iPhone doesn't prevent you from carrying multiple devices. They're just redundant at that point - which might mean choosing not to carry them all the time 'cause you don't need to.
