Re: Doom HD Re-release
Hahaha, so they released a Vert- "upgrade"? That's so beyond sad. I mean, Vert- is pretty sad on it's own but when you are touting a new version of the game...

Re: Doom HD Re-release
I think the old-style twitch FPS is in for a resurgence in the same way 2D fighters got a boost by Street Fighter IV. It's a sub-genre that's stuck in a rut much like fighters were because the multi-player aspect was their meat and potatoes and neither were very accessible to newcomers.
If somebody can make a quality, easily accessible but difficult to master Quake style game I think it would be a huge hit.

But would it take off?Menegrothx wrote:This. A new school Doom wouldn't work. What they need to do is make a new Quake game that will crush all the boring, slow paced and "realistic" modern war shooters. We need a frantic, fast paced deathmatch FPS with wild, imaginative level design that's out of this world that becomes as popular as an eSport as Starcraft 2.Pulsar_t wrote: And contrary to popular sentiment here, I don't want another Doom. Leave the series to retire in peace.
Quake Live has seen waning popularity, and it's not like there haven't been new-er FPS games like that. Unreal Tournament III for example. Other styles are simply more popular now.
Quake Live is Quake 3 Team Arena in a web browser. Pretty accessible.Gunstar Green wrote:If somebody can make a quality, easily accessible but difficult to master Quake style game I think it would be a huge hit.
Possibly Shootmania might deliver something new though. Would be more likely to if it was on consoles, sadly.

Player ratings and Starcraft 2 style skill brackets? Gamepad support for those who insist on using them?Gunstar Green wrote:I think the old-style twitch FPS is in for a resurgence in the same way 2D fighters got a boost by Street Fighter IV. I doubt a web browser could run the game if the made a new one, but it would be nice if you could easily practice while you're in scohol/on a lunch break and so, that would definately give the game more popularity.isiolia wrote: Quake Live is Quake 3 Team Arena in a web browser. Pretty accessible.
Is there any way to have console and PC gamers on the same server on a multiplatform multiplayer game? I'm curious. Didn't the Dreamcast version of Q3 have that..?isiolia wrote:Would be more likely to if it was on consoles, sadly.
My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

Nothing's stopping them. Final Fantasy XI did it for one.Menegrothx wrote: Is there any way to have console and PC gamers on the same server on a multiplatform multiplayer game? I'm curious. Didn't the Dreamcast version of Q3 have that..?
Re: Doom HD Re-release
So did the 360/PC game Shadowrun. Turned out it was massively imbalanced in favor of the PC crowd, to the surprise of absolutely no one. MMOs can get away with it because if their non-twitch nature.AppleQueso wrote:Nothing's stopping them. Kinda - PC/Mac/Linux players can connect to DC compliant servers, provided they have the DC Map Pack. The Dreamcast version doesn't support the additional maps or player counts (at least) that the other versions do.Menegrothx wrote: Is there any way to have console and PC gamers on the same server on a multiplatform multiplayer game? There are other games that have had console and PC gamers on the same servers. I know with FFXI, keeping things PS2-able has held some aspects of the game back. The "PS2 limitations" mantra got old years ago. Of couse, they learned nothing, and FFXIV will have PC + PS3...if/when the PS3 version ships.
As mentioned, Shadowrun also did this, seemingly as a test case for whether it was something MS wanted to support for Games for Windows Live. There was a blog post claiming that PC players dominated console players in tests, and I think the initial release (at least) of Shadowrun handicapped PC players, contributing to its failure. In any case, the lack of success there meant MS dropped the cross-platform play for future efforts.
There's also the upcoming Dust 514 game for PS3 that's tied to EVE Online. It'll be part of the universe with some level of interaction between the MMO and the online FPS.
On a basic level there doesn't seem to be a problem, outside of exclusive networks, in getting clients on different platforms talking to one another. Maintaining parity in features is another matter.

Give the console versions of FPS games mouse + kb support as an optional control scheme, and have optional mouse+kb only rooms and whatnot.MrPopo wrote:So did the 360/PC game Shadowrun. They've done that. Problem is most console players are like "omg m+kb is terrible, give me controller!"AppleQueso wrote:Give the console versions of FPS games mouse + kb support as an optional control scheme, and have optional mouse+kb only rooms and whatnot.
