Nahh, let's talk about Soul Nomad instead. It's the closest thing we got to a new Ogre Battle game.Ack wrote:Let's go back to discussing La Pucelle Tactics.

Re: Strategy RPG Recommendations
Okay so far I have Fire Emblem Awakening & Mystaria on my 2014 list! A RB member VERY generously donated me his spare copy of Mystaria. Big thanks there!
I have been considering DLing GG SRPGs off 3DS VC. How is Crystal Warriors? I've heard good things about it. Also, Shining Force: The Sword of Hajya (Gaiden II), good stuff? Those two are cheap @ $3.99 each.

Shining Force is always a good choice IMO, even if it is kind of basic. It's the reason I even like the genre.Jagosaurus wrote:I have been considering DLing GG SRPGs off 3DS VC. Had a great time playing both of the games you mentioned on my GG system. I still like Shining Force better, but I met another GG fan that preferred Crystal Warriors just as strongly. Be warned that it has the "Permanent Death" mechanic, al la Fire Emblem.
...just another lost soul...

Crystal Warriors has permanent death? Good to know.

I would really go for shining force cd. It is 2 of the 3 GG games whos stories are tied together and both are a sequel of SF1. I know it is more expensive however...Jagosaurus wrote:Crystal Warriors has permanent death? Good to know.

Re: Strategy RPG Recommendations
I picked up Crystal Warriors at PAX East this year and it's awesome! Great gameplay, cute anime graphics, nice soundtrack. Definitely pick that one up.
I would like to play through all the Game Gear Shining Force games someday. I have The Sword of Hajya and the other two are Japan-only. Shining Force CD looks cool, but I rarely buy games that expensive.

I highly recommend Disgaea if you don't mind game play being a little grindy. The gameplay is pretty solid with a decent variety of unique tactical options. Plus there are alot of customization options as far as leveling, party composition, and equipment. It's one of those games that you could pretty much play indefinitely thanks to the item worlds contained in each item as well as the ability to create a large variety of party members. You can pretty much save wherever on the PSP version not sure about PS2.
Also as others stated the Xcom games are great. I actually feel the original is a much better game after you get over the learning curve. Main things that make me say the original is better is that the maps were randomly generated unlike the reboot, and you could actually aim your shots wherever for instance to breach walls, set off explosives, etc which the reboot only allows you to free fire explosives pretty much. I also really liked how stray shots in the original continued to travel across the map after a miss until they hit something or travel outside of the game area. Only downside is you can easily leave yourself vulnerable if you don't manage your turn points properly and you will be faced with panicking crew mates on a constant basis unless you pick your squad mates carefully.

Yeah it's fun if you don't mind the grind.
Re: Strategy RPG Recommendations
lol yeah just a little. Well probably one of the grindiest games around but at least you feel like you get something out of it with the item world setup. The political system is a nightmare though definitely going to take me a while to be able to face those monstersAppleQueso wrote:A little grindy?Fragems wrote:I highly recommend Disgaea if you don't mind game play being a little grindy.
