Okay, I'll rephrase that. I haven't seen any real game do it. And the phone still has to have significantly more power to be able to do that and also run the OS and any background system processes. General purpose devices to dedicated devices is an apples-to-oranges comparison either way.Niode wrote:Epic Citadel - iPhone 4flamepanther wrote:I haven't yet seen any smart phone match the graphics we've seen from the 3DS so far, so that's clearly the case here as well.

I don't know what you mean by 'real game'. It's a proof of concept of the U3 engine running on the iPhone 4. Technically any U3 game could be ported to it.flamepanther wrote:Okay, I'll rephrase that. Yeah, it's a tech demo. I've seen plenty of tech demos that never resulted in a game that looked as good as the demo, including on game consoles. It shows off lighting and architecture, but not populated with anything. It's not all that hard to make lighting and geometry look more advanced than what the target platform should allow when you're dealing with static scenery. We haven't yet seen characters move around with that level of apparent detail at this point. It might be true that any U3 game could be ported, but I strongly suspect they'd have to drastically slash the polygon counts from their PC counterparts.Niode wrote:I don't know what you mean by 'real game'. John Carmack seems pretty confident that he can get Rage running on iPhone 4. I think I trust his opinion more.flamepanther wrote:Yeah, it's a tech demo. Trust me man, what flamepanther is saying is pretty much graphics 101, there's no way to get a real environment, complete with moving models and random real-life input to work, run or look that pretty. ESPECIALLY when it's not hardware geared for it specifically. It can come close to a degree, but never as good as a tech demo, just look at the Commodore 64 and Commodore Amiga demoscene. They make some amazing stuff like full 3D and video streaming apps, but none of it will work outside of that demo in a real-world application.
My Consoles:
Genesis - Nomad - SegaCD - GameGear - Sega Saturn - Dreamcast - NES - SNES - N64 - Gamecube - Wii - Playstation - PSone & LCD - PS2 - PS3 - Xbox - 3DS

Re: 3DS graphic capabilities revealed
I'm sure he can get some version of Rage running on the iPhone 4. He also got Doom running on the SNES. Same game in principal? Pretty much. Same end product? Not really.Niode wrote:John Carmack seems pretty confident that he can get Rage running on iPhone 4. I think I trust his opinion more.
See also:
Resident Evil 4 on the PS2
Killer Instinct on the GameBoy
Virtua Fighter 2 on the Sega Genesis
Dragon's Lair on MS-DOS
and pretty much any other port-down.

When you know as much about how engines work as John Carmack we'll talk. Until then, it's just noise.Mod_Man_Extreme wrote: Hmm, John Romero......John Carmack.........

Just to fan the flames a bit, Mark Rein has said that the 3DS tech spec from Nintendo isn't powerful enough to run the Epic Citadel tech demo, it's not high enough spec to even run the most basic implementation of U3 Engine.

So, you don't trust the opinion of anyone unless they're a seasoned expert in that topic? You must know a lot about game development, and have been in the business for decades, or else you wouldn't have made such a comment like that.Niode wrote:When you know as much about how engines work as John Carmack we'll talk. Also, Mark Rein said he hasn't gotten a 3DS dev kit yet, so he is GUESSING that it can't run the U3 engine.

Why so defensive? This gadget is likely going to cost as much as an iPod touch so people are entitled to expecting similar, if not superior performance from it.
