DMP PICA200 powers new handheld.

Japanese graphics specialist DMP has confirmed that it is supplying the graphics core for the new Nintendo 3DS, with its 2006 vintage PICA200 GPU at the heart of the E3 showstopper.

With NVIDIA out of the picture for 3DS, we targeted DMP as the most likely suitor for the graphics acceleration gig in last week's Digital Foundry piece on the new handheld, and the PICA200 chip is an interesting choice.

In some respects it is showing its age. The design was complete five years ago, and so in terms of industry standards it is some way behind the likes of the PowerVR SGX535 found within the iPhone 3GS and iPad, and a couple of generations behind the multi-core graphics chip rumoured for the forthcoming PSP2.

Apparently, everyone at Nintendo smoked a whole mess of weed all at once, and totally forgot they made the 3ds, until like a month ago.

In all seriousness, i dont know how i feel about this. 5 year old graphics processor? Im not one to complain about graphics but i think a new system should have something at least a little newer than that in it...

Nah. Nintendo has always had a policy of using 'just good enough' hardware for their portables. That's why they never charge too much ala Sony's PSP. This is the same mentality that brought us the Gameboy. Good enough for me.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Nintendo make profit on everything. They don't sell anything at a loss unlike their competitors. Microsoft and Sony are still losing money on their consoles. Yet Nintendo have made a profit from day one. That's a lot of money. In a way, Nintendo haven't lost a 'console war'. Ever. (ignoring the virtual boy of course).

Yeah, see what happens when Nintendo tries to use the most cutting-edge technology? You get the virtual boy.
