This happens to me every year....though that's usually my own fault and has little to do with this thread

And on that note, allow me to inform anyone who may not already know, that Amazon had quite a few of Shout Factory's Scream Factory division Collector Blu-rays currently on sale for under $20. They Live, Night of the Demons, Sleepaway Camp (I-III), Pumpkinhead, The Howling, From Beyond.... Lots of good stuff to look through, including the TerrorVision / The Video Dead Blu-ray for those who were interested (though that last one's not Shout Factory).

Damn, Lifeforce is expensive.

Also, I wish that Halloween collection was that cheap when I was looking at it in early September...

great sale. I have the vast majority on DVD or VHS. Please to see Witchtery/Ghost House as a double feature, as both are La Casa films. If y'all haven't seen The Burning, jump on that. I'm betting Tales From The Crypt/Vault Of Horror is edited like the DVD release. Intruder is great - Scott Spiegel directed. Pretty much everyone involved with Evil Dead 2 is in there. OMG Death Spa is on BR??? I might have to finally get that. Almost hate all these amazing BR re-releases considering my DVD collection haha.

No problem! Despite some glaring omissions, it is still a very good list. I have now seen 17 of the 25 films, and I can't recommend one of them highly enough...

Cure (1997) is an exceptional horror film, and it is one of the very best films I have seen this year. Directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa - who also directed Pulse and Sweet Home - Cure follows a detective investigating a series of brutal murders committed by complete strangers following a singular modus operandi (namely the carving of an "X" in the victim's neck). It starts out as a procedural focused on mental illness, but soon develops into a gory, slow-burn horror film. Like Pulse, it slowly and very effectively builds a sense of oppressive dread, and its "villain" is absolutely fantastic. It earns all of its scares,, and it is certain to stick with even the most jaded horror film fans for days. I cannot recommend it highly enough, and since it is a Criterion Collection film, those of you with Hulu+ can stream it instantly.

Re-read The Killing Joke last night, and couldn't get this guy's voice out of my head when reading the Joker:

The graphic novel is a ride through torture, in more than one sense, and Price's laugh and gesticulations seemed to be a perfect fit for the role of the clown prince of crime.

Speaking of, my local comic shop buddies have "lost respect" for me as more than likely I'll be going as Leto's Joker this Halloween.

It's TEEN WOLF TOOSDAY tonight at my place, which should be a hoot. It's raining, so unfortunately van surfing is out.

Sorority House Massacre

Continuing on with the Massacre series and venturing into the Sorority House side of things, I was pleasantly surprised with this entry. It definitely pulls from its progenitors and cribs heavily from Halloween, and I wonder how much of an influence A Nightmare on Elm Street had on it considering the nightmare angle in the film, but overall the finished product is quite good. It's not what I'd consider top tier exactly, and it's not flashy at all compared to some of its contemporaries, but what it does it does well.

The plot is simple: Beth is a college girl looking to join a sorority. Over Memorial Day weekend she is allowed to stay in the local sorority house while many of the girls are gone. The few who remain decide to have a small get together and work on an upcoming sorority event along with some of their boyfriends. But Beth starts having bad dreams and strange waking visions of a mass murder in the house. Meanwhile, a mentally ill man named Bobby breaks out of an asylum and makes his way to the house to continue the killing spree he started years ago against his family. Bobby happens to be Beth's older brother, but she was so young when the murders happened, she's completely blocked out the memory. Now she has to fight against him while her mind forcibly restores her memories via hallucinations, and there is some unexplained psychic link to her older brother.

Let me take a moment to say that this movie is not nearly as exploitative as I was expecting. A bunch of sorority girls running around all night sounds like it would result in lacy underwear pillow fights and bad stripteases while guys commit voyeurism. At least that's how the Slumber Party line of the Massacre films all go. In Sorority House Massacre, this does not happen. There's nudity, yes(in one partial sex scene interrupted in murder, and in one scene where our heroines try on another girl's clothes), but it doesn't reach the same heights as other films in the series. If anything, a lot of the sex is understated. The violence also isn't particularly graphic when compared to other films in the series, though we do see quite a few shots of knives being stuck into people, but the bloodshed isn't nearly as nasty as other stuff. "Tasteful" isn't exactly the right word for how things are handled, but it's pretty close. It's much more akin to how violence is portrayed in Halloween than, say, The Burning or Friday the 13th. Yet there is a surprisingly high body count, which Bobby handles with all the quiet ferocity and matter-of-fact manner of Michael Myers.

Here's where I feel like praising things: the characters here are not stupid. They're college educated and intelligent, and they use their critical thinking skills at times to try and understand Beth's strange dreams, to attempt to escape from Bobby or slow him down, and to even arm themselves to fight back. I hate it in a horror movie when nobody tries to fight back, and I nearly thought that would happen here until one of the sorority girls, Linda, tells Beth, "Let's get weapons" and goes for gardening implements. No, Linda isn't very effective with it, but at least she tries. Most of the mistakes that occur come from panic, and they're generally believable mistakes. The only real criticism I have is that they don't seem that emotional about when certain folks get killed, but I suppose that could be chalked up to shock. These people freak out and screw up, but it appears much more natural than others I've seen in the genre.

Well done, Sorority House Massacre. By slowly building, using your hallucinations to set a dreadful tone, making the characters' behavior understandable, and presenting human frailty in times of strife, I gotta say that I'm impressed.
