@Jago

It depends on the collection, really. A lot of those 4-packs like say for the later Hellraiser sequels or the Critters movies that are called like "4 Film Favorites" are actually okay. It's usually when you start to see older films bundled in and the movie count goes up that things get poopy.

Okay, so you'd advise to stay away from those 8+ movie horror packs on one disc? Logic tells me it'd be a rough conversion.

@Noise, I actually don't mind the first RE movie. Also, I dig how the 3rd movie takes place in a desert setting with ample lighting. Definitely gives it a different feel.

My man Noiseredux recommended:

Starry Eyes (2014), and it did not disappoint. Generally, it tells the story of a young woman who sells her soul for fame, and the dark toll her ambition takes on her and her friends. It is well-acted; and it genuinely suspenseful; it is incredibly gory; and it has a fantastic soundtrack. The ending will not surprise anyone who has seen a modern horror film, but the unique subject matter makes the movie unpredictable. Like Noiseredux, I highly recommend this movie (and anyone with Netflix can watch it instantly.

@Jago

Yeah, you pretty much got it. The prints they use are so crap that usually they're able to compress the video and audio to stupid levels and fit like 10 movies on one DVD.

I can not look away from movies. Makes me feel like I did not see it. But that part in Starry Eyes is one I could have been ok missing haha. So brutal.

A gore scene people are looking away from? Now I have to see starry eyes. I have yet to find a movie that can make me look away due to gore. I'll cringe, but nothing else unless there's something sexual going on with the gore, which doesn't happen to often.

On Dead Space, I found the horror to peter out pretty quick. I wasn't playing on a hard difficulty, mind you, but they just didn't pace enemy introduction well enough, and jump scares quit working once you realize where they are going to happen.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child

Not a bad follow up to The Dream Master. I appreciate that the A Nightmare on Elm Street series nearly kept a continuous story for the first five films(the 2nd movie being the odd one out). It eased the transition from each set of characters as they died out and were replaced each time. There is also some tough subject matter being discussed here, giving the film a greater maturity than some of the other entries. I'm not saying it's perfect, but it's better than I expected this deep in the series.

What do I like? Well, perhaps most importantly, most of the characters. It really does look like things have progressed from the previous film in the way they should, with our heroes moving on in their lives until Freddy finds a way to come back, just like he always does. It's also surprising seeing how certain characters develop, like Mark the comic book nerd, who's supposed cowardice and self-doubt belie his willingness to help his friends and show strength in times of need. Even when everyone here doubts, they do what they can for the returning heroine, Alice, backing her and supporting her as best they can even when they doubt. And they tackle issues like abortion and single parenthood with grace and dignity.

Freddy's dream world has also been revamped into a twisted asylum, which I appreciated, though here is where I start taking issues with the film: he's the son of a nun(who can't act) who accidentally got locked in the asylum and ended up being gang-raped by 100 violent maniacs. I'm not a fan of this part of the plot. I get the parallels that are supposed to exist between Amanda Krueger and Alice, but Amanda's character feels contrived and unbelievable, particularly since the actress playing her is so stiff in her delivery.

I also have somewhat mixed feelings on the dreams that kill, particularly Mark's strange comic book nightmare. Mark turning into his comic book character bothered me at first, until I realized this was perfect Dream Warrior territory. But Freddy turning into Super Freddy and then cutting up a paper doll version of Mark...we're getting hammy. And then there is the crazy death that Dan has, or the cannibalistic way Greta goes out mixed in with light anorexia and bulimia humor. Part of the me thinks, "Cool," and part of me thinks, "Ok, Freddy's turning into a joke."

At the same time I'm criticizing this, I'm still remembering that I enjoyed this entry. Sure, not as much as previous entries, but I really liked those entries. I can say that I still find the series good this far in.

Now if only it could have stayed that way.

Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare

The tagline for this movie is, "They saved the best for last," which I suppose is why they released more movies after this one, because this one sucked. This is the Nightmare on Elm Street equivalent of Jason Goes to Hell in that I find interesting ideas which might have made a cool movie but don't work at all being introduced so late in such a major horror franchise. It's also the Nightmare on Elm Street equivalent of Jason Takes Manhattan in that I found it awful.

It's the distant future of 1999, and Freddy Krueger has won; there are no children and only one teenager alive in Springwood, Ohio, and the adults have all been driven to madness. The last teenager tries to escape only to have Freddy basically throw him out and cause him to lose his memory as a way to fish out more kids to kill. Before we go any further, this is ok. Considering how much Freddy comes back, and how in nearly every film, he manages to come back and kill the previous film's hero, it makes sense that Freddy eventually wins. By this point we've also seen Freddy use kids as bait to pull in more victims. I support this.

What I don't support is what happens next, when our now John Doe ends up in a nearby shelter for wayward teens, and he ends up back in Springwood with a trio of youthful hooligans and a shelter worker who just so happens to be Freddy's daughter(and Billy Zane's sister). The idea that Freddy had a kid who was taken away, and that this is a part of the reason why he's killing folks...no. Just no. There is nowhere where I feel this fits in the series. It feels like too much of a revision of the core concept(just like Jason Goes to Hell). But then it gets worse.

First, Springwood is now a hole in space time populated by the likes of an insane Rosanne Barr and Tom Arnold, where Alice Cooper teaches children and no one ever leaves. Second, Freddy's gotten so powerful, he's not even trying anymore. At this point, he's like a parody of himself. Occasionally it works, such as when Carlos' mother appears in his nightmare to physically abuse him as she had done in the past. But then it goes full stop into a cartoon, particularly with the overly long video game death of Breckin Meyer. Picture Freddy playing a craptacular NES game while making bad quips about gaming. And I quote...

"Now you're playing with power."

"You forgot the Power Glove."

"Great graphics."

"I beat my high score."

Just thinking about this whole scene makes me hold my head in my hands. It's awful. Well and truly awful. This is before we even get to the final battle IN 3D! With Claymation! And poorly dubbed dream demons! And this is after we've had characters do complete 180s, suddenly pulling knowledge out of their asses or accepting the whole story without a shred of doubt. Our amnesiac character John Doe suddenly appears to recall a lot of information off screen, because out of nowhere he fills in gaps in the backstory that he clearly couldn't remember a minute before. Folks apparently just accept that "this is what is happening" without a shred of doubt because the script demands it.

All of this leads up to the climax, where Katherine Krueger kills her father Freddy. She then hangs out with Doc(the resident dream expert) and Tracy, shrugs, and then grins and says the title of the movie. You know what other movie did this? Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot. No movie should ever do anything where it can even be remotely compared to Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot.

No, you know what? I'm saying it: Freddy's Dead is the equivalent of Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot. They both suck. I'm so glad Wes Craven didn't let things end here.

You know the real tragedy? Guillermo del Toro wrote an alternate script that could have been instead of Freddy's Dead. In it, Freddy was so weak that teenagers would go into their dreams just to beat him up. I wish this movie had been made instead of Freddy's Dead, just to see how different it would have been.

Nightmare 5 is the grossest in my opinion.

I actually LOVE Freddy's Dead. But it was my first Nightmare movie, so there's a lottt of nostalgia for me there. It's one of those movies that I could probably recite every line.
