Yeah, I'm a math guy. I can do calculus on a napkin, algebra 2 in my head, and I live complex macros in Excel all day. While I read often, have a decent vocabulary, and can write well... spelling, nope. Ask me "premier vs premiere" and I'm leaning on Google . Same with rogue and rouge. I totally thought I nailed it . No shame!

Curious what other streaming movie services you guys are using. As I mentioned above, I am a Google Play user. Are any other options a bit cheaper? Also, at times GP will only have the option to buy a certain movie. I'd like to have a backup.

Good info to know! I don't think this version had the Harrison Ford voice over. What I was trying to say is that Ford really seems to draw some inspiration from classic noir films (here I'm thinking specifically of Bogart's Phillp Marlowe movies, but I bet you could substitute a number of old hard boiled detective flicks and the comparison would still work). I had the opportunity to watch The Big Sleep recently as an example, and the quirks and mannerisms of Rick Deckard would fit in pretty well here:

The version we watched is the one that ends with him finding the origami unicorn and getting on the elevator.

Yeah, that would be Final Cut. Scott also changed up quite a bit of lighting/coloring in this. Some of the violence from the Euro version is added back in (eye gouging is all I can remember off hand).

I've watched all of them except for the early screening they did in a couple cities. Honestly, they're all good. I appreciate the silence and wonder that comes with the cuts outside of theatrical as well.

I actually like the voice over of theatrical though. I read about a fan made cut that was Final Cut with the Theatrical Cut voice over added ... that's the version I'd want.

Overall, one of the most influential movies of all time. How many Phillip K Dick stories are movies? I can think of 5 off hand:

Or who is really the replicant? Same here, I missed out buying the 2049 BluRay upon first week release sale. I'm hoping for the extra disc like the UK received. I own the original four disc with the different cuts and definitely want all the footage of the new release. Maybe wait 6 months or year for an expanded version? "Tears in rain" if I should hold out!

Concerning the original, I am mixed on which version the better. I do like Deckard's voice over adding to the Noir quality. Yes a lot of scenes might be better without the narrator giving away a scene too quickly, but sometimes needed to "explain" a hidden meaning in a scene. For anyone who has not seen the original, definitely watch the Final Cut first so you can absorb into the movie with your own interpretation. Then watch the narrative version to see what was missed or changed in a same scene.

The stylistic elements in Blade Runner are so incredible, so well executed, that they almost overshadow all other elements in the film. There's almost a self aware sense of this in the movie; a navel gazing preoccupation with just how remarkable everything contained in its world actually is (among other things, refer to the long ponderous shots I mentioned earlier). In this sense it's a film that skirts the line of putting style over substance. But! When the stylistic elements are this damned good, it's practically impossible to fault the film for it. And thankfully the substance here is still quite good, it would just be incredibly difficult for it to match the world building on display.

THIS. Syd Mead contributed to the film, his works are iconic. The "Behind The Scenes" footage is well worth a look.

I love how much Blade Runner influenced anime of the time. One of my favorite 80s anime, Bubblegum Crisis, paid lots of homage to Blade Runner. It was clear the creators and animators were big fans.

Riddick (2013)



No spoilers.

This is the third live action movie in the Riddick series with the first being Pitch Black (2000) followed by The Chronicles of Riddick (2004). I say live action because there is an official animated movie, Dark Fury (2004), voiced by Vin Diesel as well. I’ve watched and enjoyed all four. I saw this 2013 release originally the week it hit DVD, and it was still fun on the second viewing a few years later. Looking at the dates now, I don't think I realized there was almost a decade between releases. Wow! Nice to see Riddick's character back.

Overall, I rank this as #2 in the 3 main films. It is better than Chronicles but doesn’t have the charm and uniqueness of Pitch Black. Now, Riddick does hold its own quite well! It is missing the light horror elements in Pitch Black, but overall is a solid sci fi action flick.

This round Riddick is trapped on a hostile desert planet where the environment itself, crazy animal predators, and mercenary bounty hunters are out to get him. There is an overarching back story tied into the universe that explains how he got there and his motivation to get off the planet, but I won’t spoil that for you. 90%+ of this movie is Riddick simply surviving and taking out mercs. It may not be Pitch Black, but it’s a solid addition to the franchise. I can recommend it to sci fi fans or to those who like the previous movies. Grab your popcorn and enjoy seeing Riddick destroy nature and armed foes!

Apparently, it did well enough to warrant another addition to the series. Furia is in the works. All we know is Vin D is on board, and it will be rated R. The later is important because Chronicles is the only live action in the series to be PG13. While that isn't normally a huge deal for me, it did unfortunately give Chronicles a very made for TV feel.

This is a reminder I need to play Escape from Butcher Bay and Assault on Dark Athena!

Riddick is awesome. I love all the movies in that series and would love to see another one.

Also, Escape from Butcher Bay is a great first-person adventure game, and if you like the films, you really do owe it to yourself to play through it.
