The Town That Dreaded Sundown (2014)

So glad Michi recommended this one. This was awesome. Not really a remake at all, but a sort of sequel that acknowledges the first film as a film. Modernized, yes - gore, nudity, etc as was mentioned. But also it was genuinely scary at parts. And fun throughout. My only complaint was that it falls apart in the last few minutes. But eh, was such an enjoyable movie I can't really be mad about the late-game fumble. Still worth price of admission (free on Prime btw).

The Last House On The Left (2009)

Interesting. The first half sticks quite close to the original script - but in modern day. The second half is where everything changes. Basically that moment in the original where you can tell the gang feels remorse - that moment is gone in this film - and everything that follows is now a completely different story. Having said that, it remains a surprisingly great movie. It's got more action, more exposition, and more dollars on screen than the original. It's got less grit. But it's still really good. I'll also mention (once again) how excellent an actress miss Sara Paxton is. She did a great job here.

Knock Knock

So Eli Roth's Green Inferno finally came out a few weeks ago. I haven't had a chance to see it yet - but thanks to Prime, I was able to see his NEW movie. Yup, thanks to studio delays he ended up with two finished movies releasing within a month of each other. Knock Knock is very different from anything he's done before. It reminded me quite a bit of Funny Games at times - though it didn't feel like a rip-off. This was an interesting turn in his career. Of course I've been a fan since Cabin Fever. But I'm glad to see him start to really stretch outside the niche that he's most known for. Also the three main actors here did great jobs and held awesome chemistry with a range of emotions required.

I saw the previews for Knock Kick yesterday & it was them first I'd heard of it. Didn't realize it was Eli Roth. Will look into it.

No option to rent The Town that Dreaded Sundown on Google play. Might pickup the bluray. Wiki calls it a "meta-sequel" to the '76 film. Can some one explain that?

I fell asleep halfway into knock knock. It just seemed to drag on and on and was boring to me. I'm going to have to force myself to finish it.

I think I'm going to come away from October with more horror films to watch! Thanks to this thread I'm looking at buying:
- The Town that Dreaded Sundown
- House of the Devil

Been researching the interwebs & these look up my alley:
- Laid to Rest
- Feast
- The Collection (enjoyed Collector)
- Hatchet Trilogy

Has anyone seen Laid to Rest? Was on my Amazon recommended list & looks solid from the trailer.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master

I skipped A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors to watch the 4th instead because I had previously seen 3. I've now officially seen half of all the original Nightmares.

Man, these movies are awesome. In the aftermath of Nightmare 3, Kristen, Kincaid, and Joey are all out of the asylum and trying to return to their normal lives...until Freddy comes back for revenge. To top things off, Kristen accidentally pulls a new friend into her dream, Alice, and gives her the power to do it to others. Now Alice's friends are all ending up dead, but every time they do, she gets a little stronger, until she is finally tough enough to tackle Freddy with a little help from her friends and a nursery rhyme.

Apparently Wes Craven really liked this sequel and praised its director, Renny Harlin, as being better than the directors of the other Elm Street films. I think it's pretty easy to see why: there is spectacular use of color(particularly sickly green light to herald Freddy's coming), perspective is manipulated in ways that are both artistically appealing and uncomfortable, and the actors all give believable performances even while Freddy runs about mucking things up in cartoonish fashion. This one hits the high notes of the series, even if it's more than a little ridiculous in how wrapped up it gets in its lore. Sure, the actors are believable; the story isn't.

Is it the best so far? No, but that isn't a knock to it. The first three Elm Street films are all spectacular. But this one did prove to be the most financially successful of the franchise until Freddy vs. Jason finally came out about 15 years after it was first asked for. ANoES4 is also the highest grossing horror film at the US box office in the 1980s. Not bad, Freddy. Not bad at all.

I wish the Fat Boys would write a song about me...

This one. One of those movies that manages to pull of comedic horror well, although I don't know if everybody will feel that way. Good effects, a simple story, playing on tropes, and one pair of boobs. If you're looking for a couple of laughs and to spend some time, it can be a good movie for that.

I need some horror game recommendations for PS3. I'm currently leaning towards Dead Space, simply because I need to find something to buy locally.

Carnosaur 2

Yeah, I did it, so what?

What happens if you combine Jurassic Park with Aliens with no budget and make it the sequel to a bad movie? You get Carnosaur 2! Seriously, it's basically a remake of Aliens with dinosaurs and no money. There's the threat of nuclear annihilation, the chopper pilot gets killed from behind by a critter in her aircraft, nobody knows what is going on...heck, the scummy government guy even dresses in the same flannel and vest combo that the corporate douche wore! And he dies just like the crappy officer! You always were an asshole, Gorman. But like I said, no budget. That means really bad dinosaur models, stolen sound effects, and even stock footage from the previous Carnosaur film used during the big battle against the Tyrannosaur in the end!

The setup is simple: a nuclear waste repository has computer problems and suddenly gets wiped out. For some reason the government decides to send in a mercenary crew of civilian maintenance workers to fix things, and once they arrive, they discover a lone surviving kid who has shock and doesn't want to speak for half the movie. After that, craptacular dinosaurs show up and successfully kill the black guy first. From then on, the maintenance workers and their federal stooge must use explosives and dynamite to fight the deadly dinos as they disarm the nuclear weapons being stored in the facility and try to escape to the surface. Except that the dinosaurs are intelligent and disable their traps! Man, this movie sucks!

Still better than the first one though...which admittedly isn't hard. Video footage of noiseredux defecating in a bucket makes for a more compelling movie. I don't recommend the Carnosaur series to anybody unless you feel like laughing at something.

Saw II
Image

With a tag line of "There will be blood" this better live up to the hype...

After the huge success of the original Indie film, this sequel was extremely talked up. I remember anticipating it's release and buying my theater ticket. Overall, I think this movie succeeds and the series goes downhill after this installment.

First, I like Saw II's concept of all the "test subjects" being locked in a house together. Each victim seems to have a personalized test at first, but they only show a couple (the furnace and the needles, never specifies who the razors were for). Several deaths are outside of Jigsaw's arranged "test." This seems like a plot hole. Was the house so big we didn't see them all? If not, why only a couple/few individual tests?

Anyway, over analyzing the traps aside, this is a solid entry. "Game Over."

Dawn of the Dead (2004)
Image

Another movie about a group stuck in a building. This time a mall versus Jigsaw’s house of torment.

A lot of folks hate on this one due to creative differences from original. It’s a remake, or re-imagining, of the 1985 film. I had never seen the original and watched this one when it came out on home release over a decade ago now. I really enjoyed it then and also liked it equally re-watching it.

There are fun moments and the group makes a lot of decisions you would versus typical dumb horror movie decisions. You'll find yourself cheering for the survivors. Also, the mall is kind of creepy when empty, knowing there are thousands of the undead outside. If you’re looking for a solid zombie survival movie check it out.

My path of Halloween themed movies and horror thus far!
Horror:
Cabin Fever
30 Days of Night

Its nice to see people watching some quality horror films (or, in Ack's case, horrible horror movies) as we approach Halloween, and I am really enjoying reading about them! Good work, team!

.....

Late last week, my wife and I watched:

Image

Burnt Offerings (1976). It is a very unique "haunted house" film...if you can call it that. In it, a family rents a dilapidated old house for the summer, and the mother (played by Karen Black) becomes obsessed with it. Without giving away too much, the house causes and feed off the family's pain, and as the family grows weaker, the house becomes stronger (and its condition improves). Moreover, the film takes place almost entirely during the day; it is largely shot in soft focus; and the house becomes more threatening as it becomes less ominous. Accordingly, the film is unsettling in a unique way, and it has a shocking (but not entirely unexpected) conclusion. I therefore recommend this to all fans of "slow burn" horror and suspense. (Also, the movie has a cameo from Bette Page! What more can you ask for!) The movie is currently streaming on Hulu+, and it might be available elsewhere.

Last night, my wife and I watched William Friedkin's:

Image

Bug (2006). It is a psychological horror film about a desperate and very lonely woman who descends into shared madness with a paranoid schizophrenic drifter. The film is based on a stage play, and it is wonderfully directed by William Friedkin (who also directed The Exorcist). It only barely qualifies as a horror film, however, and while the actors turn in spectacular performances, the script doesn't really do them justice. Accordingly, I have a hard time recommending it to anyone who isn't looking for an actor's case study. (If you are interested in it, however, it is also available for streaming on Hulu+.)
