The Gombez GBZ 8200 is what I use for my mom's Wii (wii-fit is awesome), but even with good Component cables the picture is pretty poor. It's far better than hooking the cables to the back of a LCD screen, but the deinterlacing is rather poor. I have to say, it does take resolution changes rather well. tho I've had a bunch of blue-screen pauses on it when switching to or from interlaced video.
Given the price, I'd fully recommend it to see if it can do what you want. I just can't stand the noise the resulting picture has.
My mom says it's fine :?

Are you using a Vizio? Asking because they're extremely common & I have 3 different models. .
Indeed , a 2016 model
Go to a 360, BD player, etc over HDMI. Set resolution to 480p. You should then be able to force to 4:3 in TV menu. I tested all 3 of Vizios with this. Interesting to note mine also accepts 480i over HDMI after additional testing. Lots of sets don't.

The retro tink 2X outputs in 480p so for $100 you get a device that handles 240p & 480i correctly & your Vizio TV can force to 4:3.

Just know the retro tink doesn't accept 480p.

Your Vizios are likely just locked down to 16:9 at 720p & up over HDMI.

  The Gombez GBZ 8200... recommend by Anapan's mom!

If the picture is 4:3 my TV will display it. If the output is 16:9 i can't force it to 4:3.

Did you test in 480p/480i?

Unfortunately most cheap scalers blow out 4:3 to 16:9 & 720/1080.
