Yeah, me too. Over 1000 games on Steam. Oy vey. (Mostly indie bundles, though, so not like I was breaking the bank.)J T wrote:I have a glut of digital games I can't sell and will never play through in my lifetime. Oops. My bad.

Why? I am pretty sure no one will ever appreciate my copies of Bebe's Kids, The Bible Game, or Rogue Warrior as much as I do. (In fact, the gaming public should be paying me to keep them off the market.Tanooki wrote:Keeping games as trophies is pretty bad, there has to be a better reason otherwise it is better really to let someone else be a trophy chump but hopefully into the hands of someone who will appreciate it as the designer 5 months or 25 years ago intended.

At least digital game collections don't take up an entire wall of your house or make you slip a disk trying to move them.

Re: Game accumulation and time management
I try to take a measured approach. My situation is different from most of y'alls, as I don't work nor will I for the next 5-10 years. So I have to be cognizant of the fact that I lack "my own money" and can't randomly splurge.
I mainly work off of a wishlist and primarily buy things online. Though once in awhile (every 6 weeks or so) I will tool around town and hit the game stores, pawns, thrift shops, etc. As I carefully consider each purchase I generally only end up with games that I want and rarely sell or trade anything.
I also replay games all the time. Probably too much. Why hello there, Ys Book I & II...

Just one wall?Exhuminator wrote:At least digital game collections don't take up an entire wall of your house or make you slip a disk trying to move them.
Speaking of which...I discovered last week that Xbox games are considerably heavier than Xbox 360 games. (I had boxes packed with the same number of games.) Do you think it is the paperwork that add all of that weight? Are the cases sturdier? (I should probably have posted this in the random gaming thoughts thread...)

Re: Game accumulation and time management
Don't Xbox 360 cases have that recycle logo cut out of them, reducing the plastic used per case? Also many have manuals consisting of like four or five pages max. In stark contrast to OG Xbox games with beefier for real manuals.

Re: Game accumulation and time management
The original Xbox cases are much heavier plastic. The 360 cases are really light weight cases and some are the lovely recycle cases with the pattern cut out of the plastic
. Makes the 360 cases alot flimsier and prone to shattering which blows. The XB1 cases use the same plastic as 360 cases but they are half as thick to save even more plastic
.

Who wouldn't? The stupid money people pay for much of that library (especially a decent sliver of it) I could pay off my car and remove a small debt we have. And I'd do it too because I could jsut get one of those 150in1 carts or fire up an emulator/flash kit for the same effect. I'd get tingly owning Little Samson for only so long before I felt dumb holding onto over a $1000 in a cart alone.Sarge wrote:although I certainly wouldn't turn down a complete NES collection if it were given to me!
JT etc, same here, I have a decent GoG locker of games I'll supposedly get around to. :\ I've tried to swear off those seasonal sales thanks to it, have the last 2 of them so far. I have a wishlist still but it will take a deep cut to crack it now.
Bone -- Similar here, having to survive off my check and then family money because of the wife and her problems. I have to buy to sell up to buy what I want for the most part as my guilt takes over. I do that same circuit of thrifts and fleas, and I measure it on what I spend (I give myself a $20 allowance) store if I don't feel a need or see things, and then get what I want or what I want to roll over to store for something I do want later. It sucks, but what are you going to do and you know it. The last 3 games I bought this weekend, 2 of them were for flips and a cheap one for me to keep on GBA. The 2 flips I have $13 into and they're worth around $60. It's not a heap but any little bit helps.

Right??? I feel the exact same way.prfsnl_gmr wrote:I have an enormous collection of games, and it takes up a tremendous amount of space. (I should know. I just moved it.) I never replay anything, and I am certain that I will never play many of the games in my collection at all. Condemn me if you wish, but I am perfectly fine with this situation. In fact, I enjoy collecting video games so much that the thought of one day acquiring every game on my "want" list makes me a little sad.
Pretty sure that's definitely not a judgement you can make for other people. If it makes us happy, then how can you tell us that's bad?Tanooki wrote:Keeping games as trophies is pretty bad, there has to be a better reason otherwise it is better really to let someone else be a trophy chump

Re: Game accumulation and time management
Okay.. I'll start by posting two excerpts from my recent 2016 Games Aquire thread updated.
---
You'll notice the same 2016 theme:
Trimming down the collection and moving to mods, ROM carts, etc where possible. Trying to de-clutter while also gaining access to more titles. All while still keeping those items I'm attached to around, and also not taking up more space & not spending more. Win, win IMO.
2016 Tracking Quantity In/Out:
YTD Sold: 160 games, 1 large box set game, 1 system
YTD Acquired: 3 flash carts/EverDrives, 4 games, 1 system, also see misc. below (for PS2 mod project)
---
This year my collection has gone fron 470 games to 310. About 1/3 sold (34% to be exact).
I picked up flash carts for the NES, SNES, & Genesis. I also soft modded a fat PS2 with games being bootable from the internal IDE HDD via OPL. These have been extremely fun projects that not only saved me money & space but most importantly gave me access to more titles!
I also didn't sell any games that were mine or my buddy's (he gave me his small childhood game collection) so I'd don't have sellers remorse at all. In fact, it was liberating to trim the fat.
Worth noting: I've donated 54 VHS tapes, 1 VCR, and 2 CRT TVs this year. I'm also in the process (almost done!) of burning 120+ DVDs & BluRays to MKV files for USB HDD playback. I love the convenience of having all those DRM free movies in a menu setting, on one tiny device. I'll be selling those movies to clear space as well. On a bit of a digital movement on all fronts it seems but I will not be moving to DRM tied down (looking at you Google Play Movies) or streaming content (looking at you Vudu).
I'll end by saying what is considered manageable will vary by person. You might think your gameroom is extremely well organized and it might send me into a panic attack
. To each there own. A lot of this also has to do with timing in life. I have a kiddo now & the available space is important to me.
With all this said, I'm still heavily involved in the hobby (playing, collecting, following projects, researching, reading news, etc ) & am considering my next jump to be an oXBOX, 360, or PS3 at the moment. I'm just going to be more mindful of my purchases moving forward & enjoy my titles I have as well. All killer, no filler!
