One game out of hundreds, at far closer than real world usage.

I don't know about that, something as simple as a developer from the era confirming it in an interview or something would be enough for me. I wouldn't really be surprised if it were true, (I seem to recall reading that Crash Bandicoot was designed to not use the color red very much because of crappy tvs) but I don't know, I kinda imagine that a lot of artists from the era would rather you see their work clearly. I suppose you could have a bit of both.
I think composite looks smoother here.
Maybe, but Star Fox is a bit of an edge case I think. What it was doing in general was pretty new. Also, crappy video quality might smooth over dithering for stuff like this, but it also smooths over any attempts at using dithering for fine detail or texturing.

I think this is the key, really. Dithering isn't necessarily meant to be looked at up close, it's used to suggest details.

So maybe when ninjainspandex said "a lot of old games", he was overestimating the quantity, but it's at least true for some games. I'll try to dig up some more later, although this has been hashed out many times. Overall? It's clearly RGB first, then s-video, then composite, then RF.

Edit: Remembered this: http://retro-sanctuary.com/comparisons% ... ering.html

Edit2: I seriously question this guy's comparison's, because his composite images look nothing like what displays on my TV. It has to be a crappy TV on his end or something. http://www.chrismcovell.com/gotRGB/rgb_compare2.html

Looks like he used a capture card, which might explain things. Stuff like that doesn't play well with stuff like composite.

Yes you are correct on overall i prefer s-video over composite on my systems, infact apolloboy is modding my megadrive for s-vid. I was just stating that games weren't always designed with rgb or s-video in mind. My advice is get a crt with s-vid at least, also as for rgb unless you have a professional grade crt like a sony pvm you will be hard pressed to notice a big difference between s-vid and scart. On an hdtv is a different story.

I think he just means that there's more of a pronounced difference between s-video and RGB on an HDTV or something.

Either that or he's referring to how hard it is to find HDTVs with s-video inputs these days.

I'm looking for one currently. I'd appreciate any advice towards that.

Source image quality has greater effect for HDTVs. With composite you're feeding the TV pre-damaged video.
People often unrealistically expect upscaling crap to net good results.

The HDTV I have (Philips 19PFL3505D/F7) has a S-Video input. Check out some game pics in the latest 16:9 thread.

It also has a ton of other inputs (under pic)
