Go for SP -101 models with the best screen, original GBA for the lowest risk (if you are not sure about expanding GBA collection), and the 20th Aniv. Ed Gameboy Micro for nostalgia/collection.
There are plenty of good games for GBA.

I will never condone a flashcart as a replacement for collecting cartridges.
