Go for SP -101 models with the best screen, original GBA for the lowest risk (if you are not sure about expanding GBA collection), and the 20th Aniv. Ed Gameboy Micro for nostalgia/collection.

There are plenty of good games for GBA.

Good suggest, but it's worth pointing out that no GBA flash cart does SDHC, so you max out at 2GB. That's a lot of games but not near a full set. Here's a couple good doujin shmups you can try on a flash cart.
I just want to say that BulletGBA kicks ass; it is the best GBA homebrew game I have had the pleasure to play.
I will never condone a flashcart as a replacement for collecting cartridges. HOWEVER, I will point out that there are three Shmups in the homebrew series called Uranis that are f'ing awesome!
