My wife and I are two episodes into the Hotel season of American Horror Story. It is sooo gory and disturbing! And I don't mean that in a good way. I just find it more gross than entertaining.
This show makes me question the logic of censors too. They aren't allowed to say "fuck" because the show is aired on the FX channel, but they are allowed to show a still living man with his eyeballs scooped out, his tongue cut off, impaled to a bed stand so that he is frozen in a sexual position with a dead woman riding cowgirl style on top of him, who is also impaled into place in the bedstand, and stuck on his still erect penis because he was forced to take sexual stimulants to the point of priapism. But, yeah, don't say "fuck." That would be bad and might offend the viewership.
I mean, it's horror, so I expect violence, but they push the twisted angle hard on this show, but unlike other seasons of AmHS, the Hotel season just doesn't give you enough plot to care about anything. The worst part is that the scare-factor just isn't there, other than the scariness of the utter depravity of it all. The one thing I will say in its favor is that the costumes and makeup look great, and the art deco hotel is pretty cool looking. Overall though, the show is all shock value and style with no substance. I'd like to just stop watching now, but once my wife starts a TV series, she insists on finishing it, so I'll probably be dragged in for the rest of this bloody mess.

Right now the NSA is wondering why I just typed "American horror story hotel necrophilia" into Google.

From what I know of you Ack, I would imagine that the NSA doesn't even consider "American horror story hotel necrophilia" to be one of your top 50 most questionable Google searches.Ack wrote:Right now the NSA is wondering why I just typed "American horror story hotel necrophilia" into Google.

I know prfsnl_gmr was going to watch this this year, so I'll stick this behind a spoiler tag.
Evil Dead (2013)

I feel like I need to add more thoughts, but the write-up is already 3 1/2 pages and I can't think of anything else to add at the moment.

Fantastic movie. Takes the horror element of the first and runs with it. And some scenes still make me cringe.
Re: The 2016 October Horror Marathon
A lot of things about that movie still make me cringe.
But blissfully it all has to do with things that are supposed to make me cringe and not something technical, so yay-rah for that.

Hm, looks interesting. Video has 1K dislikes & I can see why. Looks intense.Ack wrote:That is really a shame about Mama. I remember seeing the trailers for it and being interested. Oh well, I had hopes.
Speaking of which, anyone heard of this movie?
I saw a trailer for it a couple of weeks back when I saw The Magnificent Seven remake. Oh man, it looks good.

Re: The 2016 October Horror Marathon
I've got to get back on the Evil Dead wagon. I was obsessed with the first two movies in high school (I was always ambivalent about Army of Darkness) but I haven't yet seen the remake or the TV series.
My horror comic of the night is Wendy the Good Little Witch #26. Saying this is a horror comic is a pretty broad interpretation of the genre, but it has witches and ghosts and monsters and I like it, so I SAY IT COUNTS.
The comic opens with a one-page filler comic about Wendy fighting a dream-monster. It's light but dream-monsters are something I'm automatically a fan of so this issue's off to a good start!
The first real story is typical Wendy: bad witches are angry at Wendy for being good and decide to teach her how to be mean. The lessons in evil all backfire and help friendly animals avoid falling trees/monsters/avalanches.
This is almost certainly over-analyzing the character, but I really like how Wendy represents breaking with traditions and social norms to be the person you want to be. She might be a witch, but she wants to be friendly! Right on!
We get another one-page comic with the Ghostly Trio and then jump on in to another Wendy story! This one has Wendy helping an old (formally big bad) wolf. The wolf's being chased by the 3 little pigs who have grown up into "3 BIG little pigs" and want to beat up the wolf. Hijinx ensue.
Then there's a Casper story where Casper tricks the Ghostly Trio into doing good deeds while wearing a jack-o-lantern mask. Totally Halloweeny!
Finally there's a Spooky the Tuff Little Ghost story in which Spooky tries to get all romantic-like with Poil's cousin Sally.
It might be silly, but I really like these old Harvey Comics horror-comedy characters. I think Wendy especially has a really appealing visual design but even Casper can be great at showing how characters can be drawn expressively and appealingly with even the most simple/minimalistic design possible.
